Eclipse have a 1 month contract. They do have a connection fee though.
When my son moved they did not have broadband so took a couple of months on dial up, cancelled that contract three weeks in and switched to broadband for four months.0 -

Although Virgin.net offer a month contract, they now reserve the right to charge £50 if you leave within 12 months.0 -

Eclipse charge a £47 connection fee if a 12 month contract is not taken. A modem will cost extra. The monthly fee is £29.99 for a 2mbps uncapped service.0 -
It seems a waste in principle to pay for activation.
It also seems a waste in principle to pay for cancellation.
However, maybe if you did your calculation on total spend for the period you will be using the service, you could see whether it's worth biting the bullet and paying an activation fee in return for the service you want at the monthly price you want. Or even if it's better to get a cheap 12 months contract and waste soe of it (unlikely).
Otherwise any saving by avoiding the activation fee or the 12 month contract might be lost in higher monthly payments (or worse service).
BTW I personally like adsl4less which has a 1 month contract, and costs £14.99 per month 512k (enough for me) uncapped or £24.99 per month for 1Mb uncapped though that's not such a wonderful deal. BUT they do charge activation and you have to provide your own router or modem so that's not what you want (I got a modem for £10 off ebay but later bought a wireless router). My home provider (not adsl4less) increased my connection from 512k to 1Mb to make it difficult for me to migrate to adsl4less (after I had asked for a MAC code) but I didn't really notice any significant gain. I don't use P2P or online gaming though (didn't seem to make much difference to video news feeds).
Alternatively, you could try and get the cheapest deal even if it doesn't give you everything you want and then go for your favourite connection after you move.0 -
personally, i think its better to pay for activation if your not tied in for 12 months - that way your ISP shouldn't really charge you it again if you leave - BT charge an ISP £47 to activate a line for broadband - which is a lot to some providers - hense why they pass it on0
-
once a line is activated is it broadband ready forever? we're in a rented property till end of June so don't want to pay nearly £60 for activating it if everyone else is going to benefit from it. Should the landlord pay for it?0

mrj,
the ISP that you suggest charges £47 connection plus the cost of a modem plus £31.99 monthly for a 2mbps uncapped service - one of the most expensive!!!0 -
You have to ask for a MAC code if you want to change providers. When I switched from Tiscali earlier this year they said they didn't have such a scheme (maybe they do now) so I had to quit and have a gap between them & Freenetname which are better and have won awards (so they say). Both had free connection & modems with 1 year tie-in. The latter gave me the first 2 months free (would have been 4 months if I could have provided a MAC code).
Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.0 -
tbh - i dont see much point in 2mb - 512k works perfectly for me, maybe i could have 1mb - but still, i dont see why everyone wants a faster and faster speed.... the only difference is download speed - but unless your downloading really big files all the time - whats the point?
broadband line is activated as long as your there as the BT line account holder - if its in your landlords name - suggest to them to get the line broadband activated, then you just pay the monthly fee (and any equipment you will need) - if its not in the landlords name - then as soon as you cancel your BT line account, broadband will go aswell0
