  • A lot of shaped nappies can't be boiled or they'd be ruined
Good grief - what are they made of? Clearly I'm stuck in OS :o
Boiling point is either 100c or 212f and I still like ensuring things that need to be sterile are, by boiling them rather than relying on chemicals.
  • dry pail here too and although they're a bit whiffy when they come out of bucket into machine, they're fine when washed!

I was dd3's nappys every 3-4 days (big machine) :)

our nappies are terries, but the covers are fleece lined with plastic covered stuff (techincal I know!) so I only wash them at 40 degrees :)
  • I'm with you Dora, I used to boil my littles ones nappies in an old stew pot, just can't beat a proper boil wash can you??

Washing at 60% is adequate to remove any dirt, bacteria etc. I usually dry pail and wash every two to three days, depending on how often she poos (lol!). I use non-bio washing tablets and white vinegar. Only just started tumble drying as we only got one a couple of weeks ago. Makes the fleece so lovely and soft!

What type of reusables are you using?

Silly question...any type of vinegar (including malt vinegar?) or just white vinegar to wash?

I dry pail and wash at 60 with a little bit of napisan, every 3 days. No lingering smell after washing at all.

Distilled white vinegar. It does the same job as a normal fabric softener, but doesn't coat the fibres of the nappies. I also use this for my towels as well. Keeps them more absorbent for longer.

Thank you everyone for your comments. My washing machine is 1200 spin so i would have though it was spinning the nappies enough?

I'm thinking of pre-washing them. I want to wash them every couple of days so that i can put them in a full load.

Does vinegar neutralise the amonia smell then?

I used terries with both of my children, I never soaked then in anything, just put them in the nappy bucket and every 3-4 days washed the whole lot in the machine using bicarbonate of soda instead of washin powder or nappisan, don't use bold as it has fabric conditioner and decreases abosorbancy of the nappy, my nappies were lovely and never smelt. I bought terries and various wraps have used them for both my children leant them to a friend who used the for her two kids and returned them to me we use them for allsorts now . They are now 9 years old and probably the most useful items I have ever bought and over the years certainly saved us lots of money.

I hadn't thought of that, but just asked OH as he 'knows' about these things and he has said that yes it would neutralise the ammonia. Just slosh a bit in the softener section of the drawer next time you do a wash. You will have to let us know if it works!

i wouldn't normally use bold 2in1 but i got about 200 free one wash samples at the end of last year. Didn't want to not use all this wash powder that i've got cluttering the garage up.... Once they have all been used up i intend to start washing OS using white vinegar as conditioner.

A lovely day today so i put all the nappies on the line. Did a "sniff test" when i brought them in and they smelt "fresh".
