Just did a trial payment from lloyds online. It now pops up an 'animated clock' and in my case returns a message of:
Your request has been successfully received

Your payment request has been passed to the recipient's bank and they have advised that the credit will be made immediately.

Please select an option from the left-hand menu to continue Internet banking.

So looks like they tell you afterwards if it's by FP...

edit: looks like milarky said the same on this post(and possibly others..too many FB posts tbh :) ):

Apparently they wait for an 'OK' message from the receving bank to accept the payment, hence the clock.

so as Birmingham Midshires is part of Halifax

I can send a Faster Payment from LTSB to Birmingham Midshires
Halifax can't send faster payments so it will go by BACS from Birmingham Midshires to LTSB

That was what happened in practice when I tested this but BM seem to not show payments one day then when you go in the next it is there dated the previous day so I think they are just slow in updating.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Thanks for the updates folks, I have updated the first post to reflect your experiences.

Lloyds TSB are apparently still having problems - faster payments online are now not working, though the telephone operators can usually send by FP if you ask (but not guaranteed). They say they don't know when it will be fixed.

Imagine a world in which 'BACS' had to be retired by (say) 2010 - like the space shuttle and only one system was permitted? Would that not be prefable since they (the banks - and CC companies using then and commercial accounts) get a permanent opt-out - effectively deciding where Faster Payments operates - and does not. [This, my friends, is "An Outrage"..]
.....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam
  • I must say it is nice of LloydsTSB to directly inform customers that there is a 'problem' with the faster transaction service.....
Nowt I can see on their website.

    My thoughts exactly.

My main account is with Halifax and there is not a Halifax branch in the town I work in. I get paid by cheque so I wanted to be able to go and deposit my pay in my lunch break. Thought I would go for Lloyds because they offered a basic account with internet banking and faster payments just across the road from work, meaning once the cheque clears then I can pop online and issue a FP from Lloyds to Halifax...but nothing is ever that simple, is it

So now, I am stuck with Lloyds whose online FP service never works, and they never bother updating us, and Halifax who are rolling out FPs at a snail's pace. :T

Nationwide seem to be taking their time implementing FP. Their Flexaccount can't even accept faster payments!
