Would it be possible to stop new members from posting messages with links until they have a certain number of posts under their belt?

Good idea. On many other forums that rule applies so why not on MSE?

Could the not have an automated service that once a thread has been reported say 5 times it is automatically removed until someone from MSE has looked at it, and decide on it's fate!

This is a good idea. The BBC message forums work in this manner. Once the alert button is pressed, the post is replaced with a standard message until it has been moderated. It can be a bit annoying as there is nothing like banning something to make you want to know what it is.

I think that it is even more important on this board as the spam here is often aimed at ripping users off financially.

I think waiting for x number of complaints is a good idea. Maybe it has to be x number of complaints from members with a certain status level, otherwise one person could take exception to a thread and create x number of newbie accounts.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

how about these ppl who can do this, move posts like theirs to a section called spam if you cant find ppl you can trust to delete posts? as long as its out of our way so we can enjoy the forum again ...........

Board Guides can (and do) delete spam posts (on a regular basis) but only have the admin powers to remove (and move) posts on their own boards.

For example, last night I removed several of the petrol posts from the ebay board but wasn't able to remove any of the others, unfortunately. :(

What really makes the problem worse than it needs to be, are people posting remarks and abuse after the initial spam post! This simply makes the thread more prominent and bounces it back to the top of the page and the forum index making it visible to even more people.

If you see a spam post and aren't sure if it has been reported please report the post url to abuse@moneysavingexpert.com. You can then add a simple reply saying that the post has been reported.

There is absolutely no reason to post any further replies - all that achieves is maximum exposure for the spammer and more frustration for other posters!

(Also there is a misconception that abuse reports go to Board Guides. They go directly to the paid abuse team who have the capacity to mass delete posts across different boards and to disable posting accounts.)

I really think that 5 spam votes for an account with < 5 posts, or something like that should cause the account to be suspended and all threads deleted pending investigation from the abuse team...

Also, on the subject, I really think the "report post" thing should go through to a web form rather than launching your email client - I don't like to use my outlook adress for this kinda thing and can't be bothered then to launch a webmail session just to report a spammer...

    Hey guys,

Sorry to repeat what has already been said, but the best thing that can be done about this is report any spam to abuse@moneysavingexpert.com. This means it is dealt with properly via the systems we have in place.

I know it gets frustrating, but this really is the best way to deal with the problem

Thats something I agree on completely. I don't use outlook either, so if I click on the link I have to wait for that to open, copy the email, paste it into a new email... I guess its a limitation of the forum software.

Absolutely agree. It's so annoying having to do this that it does put me off reporting, knowing that, inevitably others will follow me and will report spam posts.

same here, mine opens up and takes time, too much of a kerfuffle tbh, someone will report them anyway, so thanks to those who do take the time to do this x
