Hi we have been going to Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria for the last 20 years in December, normally fantastic weather definately better than Tenerife. There has been some cheap flights with Thomson fly.com and a good self catering accomodation is the Terrazamar sun suites booked with Hotelopia .com,reserch if any discount codes are still available given we got 15% discount in Tenerife for September GOOD HUNTING if u require any more info please ask
  • Thanks again everyone! what is the shopping like in Gran Canaria ? My kids like branded designer clothes and whats appealing to me about Tenerife is the Safari Centre which I believe has Quiksilver/Benetton etc.

Anyone who has been to Tenerife is the shopping much cheaper, what shopsetc. and is the Safari Centre very big.... I've read there are dancing fountains on at night I am hoping it will be nicely decorated out for Xmas..

Now the airline - anyone flown Jet2 to the Canaries?? What they like I have read the planes are old but they have ranked highly in Which? Mag report so can't be that bad. I am reckoning there will be no in-flight entertainment on the 4.5 hr flight.... any feedback on them would be great!

Got to back Elle up here and the others on the recommendation for Playa Blanca, not just because 1. Elle is my best friend :), 2. I live here, but because its the perfect holiday resort, we have lovely beaches, both natural pebble ones, unspoilt ones, white ones, water sport ones, but great range of hotels and villas with something to suit most pockets and requirements, also because we have a seriously laid back atmosphere, its illegal to be hassled in the street by people handing out flyers or trying to drag you into bars, the bars and restaurants are of good value, children are always welcome. We have markets to designer shops, cheapy casual bars to gorgeous beach front trendy cocktail lounges where you can get your glad rags on to see and be seen.

tenerife for me, around las vistas/safari centre in between los cristianos and playa de las americas
Trophies are like Buses, you wait 26 years.
Then 3 come along at once!!!!
  • That Iberostar Costa Calero hotel has good reviews, pretty good value I think! I'm thinking of sending my mother and her sister (both middle aged) there for a holiday. Is April a good time?

Anyone know what the area is like? Will it be full of drunk Brits partying, or is it away form those kind of areas?? Can they leave the resort for a couple of day trips out somewhere? (without a hire car, they wont drive, hell will freeze over before they do that lol)

    Thanks!!

We just came back from Gran Canaria last week and had a great time. Stayed in Playa Del Ingles and although I think is isn't as good as it was we still enjoyed the shops. We got a taxi a several times to Meloneras which was just under 5 euros the shops were great. Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Hackett, Ralph Lauren, Burberry, D & G, Mango, and more (can't remember them all) I don't honestly think they were much cheaper than the UK but lovely shops. Hope this is of some help to you.

Tenerife - a good alrounder with more things to do and beautiful road throught the centre in the moutains. Very touristy in the south west (playa de las Americas), Puerto de la cruz in the north is the nicest place IMHO (and calm, doesn't have that atmosphere of drunk people wandering around) but can often be cloudy in the winter. Gigantes on the north west coast is a quieter, smaller nice place but a little islated (you need to go all the way round the island to get to the capital for example). A 2 week place.

Gran Canaria - Nice Island, but not a great deal to do. The capital is nicer that the capital of Tenerife, Playa de Mogan is nice too. Peurto Rico and Maspalomas is popular but the restaurants can get extremely annoying trying to get cutomers in. Maspalomas does have some excellent beach dunes though. A 1 week place IMHO.

Lanzarote, very much like Gran Canaria in that there is less to do and is worth a 1 week break. The are a few attractions like the volcano and black beaches, but from what I remember the capital, Arrecife, was a dump.

Just returned from playa blanca, And we were well impressed with the island... except for the constant wind :( but would go back again
it helped we only paid £75 pp for 2 wks sea and pool water was COLD!!!
Where do you find deals like this? I've been looking for a couple of weeks on lastminute, teletext, travelsupermarket and the likes and can find nothing in the canaries for less than £250pp regardless of whether its last minute or months away!

Angiep and Elle, you are convincing me to go! Can you recommend any decent accommodation in Playa Blanca that is near Playa Dorada/Playa Flamingo? I find it hard to tell where hotels/apartments are from the descriptions and would like something close to the beach.

Also, is it true that PB is still being developed and there is a lot of building work going on? I'm undecided between PB and Puerto del Carmen.

    Thanks.
