I live in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote... and yes the Marina is lovely (moving house to just around the corner from it, at the end of this month - hurrah!) Puerto Calero Marina is well and truly open.
There's plenty of shopping there... and Playa Dorada has plenty of beach activities on offer. There's a waterpark in Costa teguise (about a 40 minute drive) but I wouldn't recommend it myself, as it needs a good overhaul.
If shopping and waterparks are your big thing - then I'd stay stick to Tenerife. If it's only a side interest... then Lanzarote has what you need.
I wrote a review of Playa Blanca for this site a while back... here's the link to it.

It won't make that much difference really, though out of the main 4 Gran Canaria (Big Dog) is the most southern......0 -
We really enjoyed Lanza. We stayed in a quiet resort called Costa Collero in the only Hotel there which was an IberoStar 4 star all inclusive and was lovely. Little harbour with fashion shops and trips. About a 10 min free bus to P. Carmen.:T0

wow thanks for all your replies!!! I think I am going to look at Tenerife for first option (Los Cristianos as I like the idea of walking from one resort into the next Las Americas) but I will keep Lanzarote as a possible second. Now I just need to find the holiday! Some cheap flights avail with jet2 but I have heard bad reports and I am a nervous flyer....0
