It looks like the dektop is accessing the IP address directly instead of accessing the router which will access the IP address.
On the desktop
goto cmd again and type
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Edit: Also goto control panel - internet options - connections
check that the LAN setting are automatically detect settings and never dial a connectionAfter falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

Ok.....when I typed ipconfig/release it set the ip address to all 0's and when I typed ipconfig/renew and hit enter it did nothing! am I missing something??0 -
your 169.254.*.* ip address on your desktop is actually an APIPA address... meaning that your router hasn't passed an IP out to your desktop via DHCP.
I'd expect you'd usually get this if there was MAC filtering... the best way to find out what is going on is to type 192.168.1.1 into Internet Explorer on your laptop.
This is the physical address of your wireless router... from here, you should able to access the configuration on your router and see what going on..
beware that you might need credentials to log into your router... look underneath the router.. or try a username of "admin" and a password of "password"0 -

have a look into the router config to see if you can find anything within the configuration that points towards an access list... im unfamiliar with your brand of router but if you can find an access list within the wireless setting, add a new entry called desktop and specify the MAC address from your wireless network card. save the settings, log out of the router, reboot your desktop.. try your wep key again0 -
Can i confirm:
You've checked the internet settings are set to automatically detect settings?
If you had to change this, you would need to do the release, renew again.
Your desktop is using a new wireless dongle?
Was there software (possibly ZD) that is now loaded in the bottom right of the screen? After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
