  • I have been on Ebid for nearly 2 years or so now and have had no problems whatsoever, it's run by 2 blokes called Gary & Mark who regularly patrol the help section and the message boards and offer help & advice.

Their prices are V cheap to list and you can even list for free, there are no FVF's and if you get a NPB - you can request to get your listing fee back, which they are quite happy to do.

I think they have changed their seller policy so that you have to subscribe to sell things now but if you activated an account say last year, you don't have to pay.

Have tried QXL but not had much success - also buyit.com any other auction sites to recommend??

But Tesco are evil and keep building their sheds in completely inappropriate places. Sorry, off topic I know.
As a seller, it allows me to offload things like CDs that used to have no resale value
I take it you've never sold at a car boot sale then?
When selling low value items, eBay fees and Paypal fees together can make up a substantial proportion of the selling price. I still have a basic non-fee-paying Paypal account because I don't wont to pay 20p + 4% on things I sell for 99p, but it sometimes causes problems. I keep getting customers trying to pay with credit cards even though I specify in my listings that I don't take these, and I recently had a customer who told me she tried to pay from her bank account the second time, but I still got a message saying I couldn't take her payment without "upgrading" to a fee-paying account.

You cannot offer paypal as an option on your listings if you don't accept debit/credit cards, all you can do is leave the 'I accept paypal ' box unticked and then just mention your own terms for accepting it in the body of the listing. As for a bank transfer, depending on the set up of your buyers account that might also be considered a payment that needs upgrading to accept, all you can offer is paypal funded by an existing balance in their paypal account.

Your buyer can of course also file a non performing seller claim against you for not adhering to the terms of your own auction. If you don't lik epaypal then it is probably best to refuse paypal entirely and stick with bank transfers and cheques, that way you don't have to worry about your buyers misunderstanding your terms.

Ebid is good if your buying as almost everything I've ever typed in on there has no bids. But for selling it doesnt seem to do too well.

In 'My eBay' go to 'My Account' and you will see what you owe eBay there.
  • I would be very wary of buying or selling off eBid.

I bought a Nokia 6230 from there last year & never received it. I done a chargeback through Paypal but only managed to get £3.45 back from the £100 I paid for the item. I know this isn't the sites fault & you can get people doing this on eBay but, despite many e-mails off to the customer services etc., not once did I receive a reply.
So (like all auction sites i guess) use at your own risk!!

I came across this whilst looking throught another forum on another site and thought it might be useful, as it save the expense of ebay fees! hope it helps!!!

A good site, very small still, but has a lot of potential - TheFreeBay

    FREEBAY

It's basically a place where you can post items that you no longer want or need, items that you'd otherwise throw out or leave to collect dust, and anyone who is interested in getting hold of that item can send you whats known as a personal message within the site and request that they have it. COllection is then organised by both parties.

Similar in a lot of respects to freecycle, though the great advantage this has is it enables picture uploading and has other features that freecycle does not.
    RIP OFF BRITAIN!!!!

If you look in your Seller Account (under My Account as Ollielong mentioned), it will tell you how much you currently owe. For full details, check your Paypal account if required. You can choose to pay your outstanding fees from your Paypal balance immediately if you want. Remaining fees will be collected monthly by direct debit if you selected this when you set up your account. Any balance over £1 has to be paid within a month, I think.

Why did nobody tell me this before? I know that the US eBay recently issued notification of a new rule that sellers were not permitted to select Paypal as an accepted payment method if they only accepted certain types of Paypal payments, but I have never been informed of any such regulation on the UK eBay. I have been putting that payment information on my listings since I started selling, and eBay have never told me I'm not supposed to (except for one occasion when I tried to sell something on American eBay, so I assumed this rule only applied to the US).
It is also wrong that members are misled into believing that payments from bank accounts can be accepted without upgrading if this is not always the case. It's unfair on the buyer as well as the seller. It's about time we were given some clear information on this.
Is this just a SNAFU, or are eBay deliberately attempting to confuse people into "upgrading" (and I refuse to type that word in this context without the quotation marks!) to expensive fee-paying accounts?
