Tax Disc - quick help needed

Could the disc have been stolen? If you don't have it, but you have evidence that the car has been taxed, contact your local VRO for a replacement?

Hi all,

thanks for the responses. I drove the car home (insured) without the disc.

The story is the car was in a private registration and had to be changed back to the standard reg. The new tax disc is on its way back with the new registration - so at the moment all i have is the receipt and some number from the registration place.

The police can use the reg plate to check that the car is taxed.

I'm still not 100% sure this is legal though.

I shall have my insurance document back today/tomorrow when i can purchase a new disc. My new question is what happens if i have two (the other one comes back) can i send it back and get the money back. Thanks for all your help - dont really want be breaking the law.

Give your local cop shop a ring - they may even advise not to bother buying a new disk if you can verify one is on the way. Its worth asking, I'm sure they'd rather spend 5mins sorting you out on the phone than all the hassle of `doing' you for not displaying a disk. Please let us know what they say, it would be interesting to know the legal situation...

When a cherished transfer takes place at a DVLA Office, the application is completed, and posted back to the applicant, or the garage-who is acting as a 3rd party for the applicant (think this is happening in your case).

The paper work posted back to the applicant (garage) consists of a replacement tax disc for the 'donor' vehicle (your car), a letter authorising the number plates to be changed to an age-related registration mark, a Number Plate Certificate (to enbale the applicant to purchase new plates), an amended MOT Certificate-if the car is over 3 years old, and the small green tear-off called a V5/2 from the registration document, which will have been duely stamped with a re-registered stamp and new new registration mark by the DVLA Office.

If the vehicle is being sold without a disc, its either because the licence had just expired before the transfer was being done, and therefore could not be re-placed, or either the original keeper of the vehicle or the selling dealer has sent the new (replaced) disc for a refund when the papers come back from the DVLA Office.

If you want to tax the car, you will need to go to your nearest DVLA Office, with the green slip, MOT, insurance and relevant rate of duty, complete a V62, and they will tax the car, and a photocopy of the green slip, and the V62 is sent to Swansea for a Registration Certificate to be issued in your name. This can not be done at a post office with a green V5/2 that has not been printed with the registration mark that is now on your vehicle.

The only way you can tax a car without a V5C is when the vehicle is in your name, and you have the V11 reminder form. As this is not the case you have to produce either a V5C or the V5/2.

As your V5/2 will be re-registered with the new registration mark of your vehicle, they can not scan the details in the post office, as they would be scanning the details of the car that now has the cherished mark on it-ie not your car. So you would have to go/or post your documnets to the nearest DVLA Office, where they can check the record of your new car with the age-related registration mark.

I think you used to just need the MOT and insurance certificate, but it changed a couple/few years back. To stop/hinder car thieves.

The offence the police are interested in is failure to display. If they can't see the disc they do not have to bother checking one exists. The offence is already being committed and is an absolute one. It takes them no time at all to issue a notice at the road side to a driver, probably far less than it would take to explain this if you ring them up.

Hi, they are still waiting on the log book to come back (the old one came and now waiting for the changed one) which is why the tax disc hasnt come back as they said it should come back with the log book.


Should i wait to drive the car when the book comes back with the disc - the garage said it will be fine as the car is taxed and just waiting for it back. I would rather wait until everything 100% legal (which the garage is saying it is).

The tax disc won't come with the Log Book, because that's printed in Swansea, the tax disc will have been replaced and printed at the DVLA Local Office when the transfer was done.

Are you sure the garage haven't sent it for a refund? As the above poster said, its an on-the-spot fixed penalty £60.00 fine for non display, and they'll write a ticket, which is sent to the DVLA for another fine.

As I said earlier, if they know the registration mark that has been allocated to the vehicle after the transfer, they will have had the replacement disc, disc's are not sent from Swansea
