There were innocents hurt when the market was booming too (young ppl in villages forced out by those buying second homes, loss of community in such villages, young families who could not afford to save deposit etc).

Innocents? Nobody is innocent. Nobody has a right to a job. Nobody has a right to a house.

It's a tough old world out there, and it's about to get tougher.

    It's every man for himself.

    Survival of the fittest.

Your signature mentions a £180k mortgage!???

If you live in or near London, that's not a ridiculous mortgage.

These people have had boom years and should have saved to help in lean times.

Many people who started jobs in the last 6-7 years may not have realised they were working in a boom period, to them it was normal, they knew no different.

Its bad enough people gloating over the troubles of those people who have foolishly over stretched themselves, but the sanctimonious, patronising 'advice' to people who may be made redundant is sickening.

Many people who work in the building trade have had to spend most of the week working away from home on mega projects like T5, city centre flats and now the Olympics. Wages have also been kept in check to some extent by the importation of east european labour.

And please don't respond with pretend anecdotes about plumbers earning more that consultant doctors.

Forget doctors. I never even mentioned them. I do have experience of what income increases the industry has seen in recent years and these people know they are working on contracts which by their very nature do not last forever. If their wages were as low as you imply - which we actually know they were not - they would have little problem finding work in the local area plumbing or undertaking private work etc for £6-7 pounds per hour.

Many people I know work for the minimum wage and I'm not far off of that. Somehow though that doesnt matter.

Give thrifty the credit she deserves as i have read a lot of what she has posted and she did see this coming but others still cant see it coming even now..its the niave i feel sorry as they wont be able to protect themselves...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

I think so many thought that the last few years were the norm. Bit like in ole Thatches time but it`s different now. Oh heck, no it ain`t !!!!!! That was a time when lending got loose. Oh yea, house prices soared and then it all went sour. Interest rates went wild because of inflation. Mind you we have low inflation by comparison *cough*. Unemployment went up. All horrible.
Now I think it will be interesting to see what will happen. Gordon Mac Prudence has got himself between a rock and a hard place. If he puts up interest rates a lot of people will go under as will businesses. To keep it where it is will only fuel inflation.

Bet Tony Bluurr is laughing his socks off!!!!

The point is that some people who have earned damn good wages in the past decade but not been out and bought stupid amounts of material gear are about to lose their jobs and its sad.

I actually dont disagree that it is sad but my argument is that they have had it good during the last ten years and very good at that. If they did not spend stupidly on material stuff they should be in a better position to shoulder this than say, those that have been on NMW for the past umpteen years, or pensioners or many many others. I'm afraid I feel sorry for these people far far earlier than I do those in the construction industry.

What about those more recent recuits? Those who are now apprentices, and might well get laid off before they finish their training?

    whats your point?

My point is there are a lot of threads on here desperate for this crash to get worse so that house prices can be more affordable. However it is really affecting those ordinary people working in the housing industry who never saw the creamy profits that the housebuilders got!

The other innocents that are affected are the young boys leaving school looking for an apprenticeship. We have plenty of enquiries from school leavers looking to start in August as an apprentice with none being available.

We already have 5 apprentices and will be looking to pay them off if things do not pick up.

I believe unemployment figures will increase significantly in the next few months. June targets for builders are almost reached and as you will know the larger housebuilders are paying off a lot of people at the end of this month. Again this will affect the wider economy as less people with money in their pocket and this is just the beginning ..............
