Is the toilet upstairs or downstairs. Also have you a stench pipe outside the property or running down an encased wall inside the house.
It's upstairs. Not sure what a stench pipe is, but the pipe does go out of the house. No encasing.

    It's upstairs

So the collar is most likly to be cast iron.

If you break:eek: the pipe in the wrong place, the damage might 'spread' further along the pipe!

In an old house of mine I rmoved the cast iron pipe. ALL of it.
Not a job to take lightly :D from a ladder, its very very heavy.
Then replaced in up to date with wonderful plastic.

If you were to replace soil pipe with plastic one would you also have to move that other waste pipe shown in the picture above too? I still vote for the false panel then you can hide away all the ugly pipes plus you gain a very useful shelf above the toilet.

Gents, thank you for all your help.

I don't want to go with the false wall option as I don't really have the space + it's not what I really want to do.

Chipping away some of the paint from the collar proved it was cast iron too. I've got builders to chop it off via an angle grinder, close to the wall, from which I will shove a flexi pipe in.

Once the builders leave, I'll take a photo of it just to complete this post.

Funny how I got loads of responses on these forums in comparison to other DIY based sites ;-) Cheers.

    But !!

If the pipe is cast iron , you might get a clean cut with an angle grinder
AND it might not shatter

The pipe is cast iron, and best to cut out the collar as you say with a grinder.

    Andy

It is a overflow pipe, not a waste pipe, and will not be needed for the new wc.

Different seat for different jobs maybe:
Top seat to sit on for cutting toe nails etc
Next seat for those with small behinds (ie. kids)
Next seat for women no.1's and no.2's
Bottom seat for men no.2s with space to accomodate...
All seats up for men no.1s

Think i'd be worried doing no.1s...could be painful if that lot comes down...ouch!
