I would advise that you cancel the autorenew on your present policy and next year, use Quidco or similar
Sorry - but the "overpayment" that you have made - swelling the coffers of Nat West is not recoverable - it is down to naivety and that is something that these banks lap up !!
Just write it off as an expensive mistake.
Yeah thats what i thought sadly. I have already cancelled with them and am now with E-sure. Thanks for your reply and advice anyway :)
  • I used Comparethemarket.com to see if I could get a cheaper quote for my buildings and contents cover. I scanned the list of options but did not click through to any of the quotes to look at in detail as I didn't have time; they send you an email of the best quotes, so I planned to revisit it later. A few days later, I got an email from CreditExpert (Experian) saying my credit report had been viewed and recommending that I logged in to check my score. I did so and found that 4 of the insurers who had quoted via CTM.com had checked out my credit record. I was not very happy - I do not think that asking someone for a quote gives them the right to check your credit rating! I told my husband, who said that he had done the same for his car insurance and his credit report was checked so many times by quoting insurers that his rating was adversely affected purely because of the volume of enquiries. Should there not be some sort of disclosure either by the insurers or by the comparison site saying that conducting a search could result in a number of credit checks? Luckily, I have a healthy credit score and am not in the process of trying to get credit just now, but it could have been a very different story. Has anyone else experienced this? I have never experienced this before, I'm guessing it's a new thing, but I don't like it!!

    Your husband was mistaken. (And how did the "adversity" present itself?}
  • I have just received my renewal for building and contents insurance through swinton with a price of £203.29 but upon reading the cover letter with IICH VIA INTEGRA IT IS PRICED AT £178.29 so I read all the small print of charges and there is a £25 yes £25 RENEWAL FEE, so have I got this right they charge you a fee for giving them your business or am I totally confused, needless to say I don't think I will be renewing with them unless they are the cheapest be a mile.

They will negotiate on the price if they think you're going elsewhere.

Although Swintons are best avoided where possible as they have a certain reputation
  • Whilst I have been very savvy regarding utilities (I have joined the Cheap Energy Club and I have changed supplier umpteen times) I admit I have been very complacent regarding Buildings and Contents insurance. I have had my buildings insurance with my mortgage provider for 30+ years. My contents has been with Halifax for many years. My contents policy renewal came in (I have NEVER in 30+ years claimed on my contents) and the renewal cost is £327. My buildings policy (I have only ever had 1 claim in 30+ years and that was over 10 years ago) renewal cost is £169. Total for both buildings and contents = £496.

I have just had a quote from Direct Line (with whom I have my car insurance and whose service was exemplary when our car was written off) for a combined buildings and contents policy amounting to £189. I have carefully checked the detail of the policy and actually have enhanced coverage on certain items. Savings £307!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I should have listened to Martin on this.:rotfl:
  • Couldn't agree more - EVERY quote I have had from SAGA has been at least 40% greater than others for same coverage.

Was with Saga for a few years up to 2012 for Buildings and Contents, 4 bedroom detached house with river at the bottom of the garden( declared) and have been happy.Got the quote last year for £277, up from previous year of £235 , phoned and got offer of £257. Got a mailer from More Than offering free contents cover, rang for a quote and got Buildings and Contents for £197, which I opted for( more than ( sorry , no pun intended) adequate cover for all my contents)After all the floods this year I was dreading my renewal quote( have not been affected by the floods as the river was dredged and widened 25 years ago and has not flooded since , and our address is now no longer shown as being on the flood plain)...delighted to report that they have still offered the free contents as I have not made a claim and dropped the premium to £175. Relieved and delighted.

Re the post below suggesting Quidco.....wish I could .Have to get any quotes via phone as have the river at the bottom of the garden, and it has to be declared as it is 100 yards away, cannot use any online comparison sites or cash back sites as they only allow straightforward policies.

Don't forget QUIDCO (or similar) cashback
I always run my details through QUIDCO prior to purchasing any insurance nowadays
My last home insurance (Sheilas wheels) was only £125 (b&c) after £60 cash back !!
I change insurers every year - so am a "new customer" every year.
  • I have recently had an alarm fitted to my bungalow.this cost me £500.Today I contacted my insurance company the A.A.to advise them and expecting a reduction in my premium,to my surprise I was told there was no reduction but I was advised that now having an alarm and if I do not have it turned on and I was broken into I would be liable to £500 excess on any claim.
Discussed my complaint with chief exec.office but they are not interested,I will not be renewing with thus company again.
    A very disgrunted customer.
