I'm quite a fan of moneysavingexpert and read a lot of the forum responses and opinions and decided to give my own for once.
Firstly, I'm married to a 'Yorkshireman' and if any of you know (or are one/married to one), you'll understand how tight the purse strings are when it comes to spending on anything!
Now when we decided to convert our 17th century barn, I was adamant that I wanted to have authentic antique/reclaimed oak floors, but died at seeing what the prices were for such floors in the market. I then started to look at solid oak flooring that I could perhaps stain to darken the appearance, but that just seemed a lot of hard work to possibly create something that wouldn't come out the way an aged floor should!
Then I discovered British Hardwoods (britishhardwoods.co.uk) and they gave me the solution I needed, their Traditional Aged Oak Flooring. It's artifically aged through distressing and fuming in their factory (yes, in Yorkshire!) and although it's now about £53 per square metre, I wouldn't exchange it for anything (not even reclaimed). The quality is second to none, they supply in proper wide floor boards (200mm), offer a range of quality treatment and my floors after 5 years are still stunning.
So I would consider quality over price for something that is a major part of the home and potential re-sale value if it's for investment. The staff there have been ever so helpful with my silly questions it's just nice to know that their floors are actually manufactured in Britain, not mass-produced and imported from all over the world.
