Chaps/Chapesses,
There are tons of places that do wood flooring these days but i get confused with all the fancy names, Jabota, KUKU etc.
The nearest place to me is Floors2go but i'm not right sure if this is the cheapest place.
I am prepared to spend reasonable prices for Solid wood that will last me a while. Engineered and Laminate doesn't quite cut the mustard,
Can any builders/tradesmen/bargain hunters advise where the cheapest places for Wood flooring are?
Im based in Manchester - i have a costco card and i know someone with a Howdens account if that helps?
Looking for some slick walnut flooring like this:
http://www.ukflooringdirect.co.uk/Solid_Wood_Flooring/Solid_Walnut_Flooring/Berthold_21mm_American_Walnut_Nature_Brushed_and_Oiled.html
But am not prepared to pay £96 per sq m.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

I'd get samples sent to you from the ebay suppliers and see if one matches what you're looking for, there are lots of suppliers on there. Uk Flooring Direct are pretty competive in some areas, IMO.
If you go thinner than 21mm you'll get cheaper, of course.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Then you're missing out! Not everyone on ebay is a sheister and there are plenty of small merchants and wholesalers on there that you mightn't otherwise find.
You can see how established a company are from the number of feedback they have. It's a bit harsh to knock something if you won't even try it. If a seller has 8 feedback, you might wonder if they're genuine but if they have 000's then they're likely to be as trustworthy as any internet retailer. The retailers almost always have telephone numbers for you to call and chat about the product too.
I've got genuine John Lewis kitchen units downstairs waiting to be installed; absolutely stunning, quite plainly of better quality than the Schreiber kitchens we've had before and it cost me £500 and the cost of the van and petrol to collect it.They were used for the brochure photoshoot and nothing else.
Whilst quality varies, a brand name isn't the only place than provide quality - after all, the trees aren't brandedAnyway, what is seconds? If you pay a third of the price for a floor where some of the lengths have been filled in places or have knots in - some would call it character

My brother bought 2 colognes from a powerseller with over 5,000 positive reviews and guess what?
He got scammed with a second handed BS version and the seller acted like he never existed when my bro tryed contacting him
Sorry i dont trust it and never will.0 -

You're always going to have to be wary of a totally brand new designer branded product at a knock down price. Their are plenty of counterfeiters out there.
You can't really buy a counterfeit wood floorThe market just isn't there, whilst there are lord knows how many people out there wearing blatantly fake handbags, tshirts etc and not caring because they just want the name on them. You'lll find fake perfumes, sunglasses on market stalls up and down the country; in fact, across the world. The market is there for them.
I'm absolutely sold on ebay. I have saved literally thousands on stuff for my houses.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

It's the old story isn't it?Caveat emptor.Just about everything in my last house came from Ebay.Never been scammed once.I buy all my tools for my business from there as well and have saved a fortune. You just have to use common sense.0

Why is your mind set on solid wood? The installation costs are alot higher than with an engineered board, they are no where near as stable (expand and contract alot), if you are fitting to a concrete floor then you need to check the moisture content and if high you have to apply a liquid dpm before gluing the floor down.
I could go on, but I suggest you have a look at the flooring section on diynot.com for some more advice.0 -
We're after an oak floor, and we are quite close to Manchester so am watching this thread too. We have looked at some in Topps Tiles in Aston, but weren't impresssed..only looked 'cos they had a sale on.
We've looked at Ebay, but not followed any leads yet as we are not quite ready to lay the floor. Not sure about anywhere else in Manchester. There doesn't seem to be a lot around, so we have a mate in N London keeping an eye out for us. I'll keep looking and post here if I come across anything interesting.0 -
Bungarm, we secured oak flooring at Howdens for £18 + VAT though none of our tradespeople have been able to secure it at quite that price. Decent width to the boards (120mm?) so they didn't look cheap. I've never had solid wood flooring in my own home before and as a result learned the 'stiletto heel' lesson very quickly.
I am coming around to the idea of engineered boards in our new house - the ceiling height in our dining room is very cottagey indeed and I'd be whacking my head if we laid solid on 2x2 like we did in the last place.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Excellent...thanks Doozergirl...! I'll drag the ol' man round there as soon as I can. Sounds like what we've been looking for. I'll try knocking 'em down to £18 too0
