Sorry not helpful reallly but just an anecdote....
Went to a friend's wedding in Durham Cathedral last year. Being a tourist attraction as well as a place of worship, there were people standing & watching at the far end of the church (which was roped off) - far away from where we were sitting, in the choir bit. As we walked out of the church up the aisle, we went near the members of the public and heard a little girl say breathlessly to her mum "There she is Mum! Isn't she wonderful!". My friend (the bride) could barely hold back the tears and said it really made the ceremony for her!

But on topic I agree with the others, you can't stop people doing it ... I always stop and look if I see a bride going into a church. Might create bad feelings for you on your special day if you try to discourage them and they come anyway....

I agree with everyone else - if you are getting married in a public place then you can't stop people turning up. My aged aunt was a church goer and it was tradition for members of the congregation to attend and wish the new couple well. i don't see anything wrong with it.

I have been guilty of it myself when someone who I work with has been getting married and also remember doing the same when one of my teachers got married.

It might be a bit different if your guests weren't able to get into the church as it was full of well wishers but realistically this isn't going to happen

When I got married a couple of years ago, there were about 20 "random" people standing outside the church. Personally, I thought it was lovely and some of them were invited to the evening do, and others weren't. There was even a spontaneous round of applause as I came round the corner (I'd walked from my parents' house to the church). It was the first time that day that I'd had a blub. :) When I was little, I used to do exactly the same. Plus, a wedding happens in that village once every 3ish years......

Officially, you can have every person in the church as it's illegal to conduct a service in a concealed room. Basically, anyone can wander in. Most people don't as common sense dictates.

    Enjoy your day!

The only uninvited guest I categorically do not want at my wedding is H2Bs ex wife (she is of the opinion that she has the right to be there for SD2B   )!!

I can understand that somewhat - think I should be ok on that one - but am not holding my breath as she is due to try and throw another spanner in the works shortly.
OH asked if I wanted to invite my ex and his partner to make sure that DS and DD got back to the @rse end of the world where they live so we didn't have so much hassle getting them there before we go away. I strangely refused :rotfl:.

Couldn't have coped with my mother telling me how wonderful she still thinks he is . I would set her straight but don't want her to blurt it out to DD and DS ;)

  • On my wedding day I actually enjoyed having strangers watching me going into the town hall, and in the car on the way there I liked the idea of people knowing that it was for a wedding too.

If it's people you actually know and don't like, think of it this way: if they were hoping to put a downer on your day and hoping to see you looking anything other than stunning they will be disappointed!
Self employed and loving it :D

It also adds to the "princess" part of the wedding. After the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, all I wanted to do was get married so it let me act out that dream a little more. :D Plus, most people have paid an arm and a leg for their dress so the more people that see it, the merrier!!!!

    Thanks Everyone.

All comments greatly taken on board... I understand that this is what people do and as i am getting married at church i am fully aware of how public it is because its a church (mind you it is a hidden little church not at all in the open view of the public). I just wanted to get other views on it...
    Thanks again...

I work right next to the local registry office and whilst we're not allowed out of the building you can guarantee there will be at least 2 people at the window :rotfl:
