You're not a bit thick, this is new to you and you just need the basics to learn and hopefully pass on.
You will get a better rate as you will get the official bank rate of the day with no commission.
Eg. todays bank rate at the minute is £1 = €1.2636'ish and the tourist rate is £1 = €1.2120'ish, though abroad you may get €1.23 to the £. Also with a Nationwide card there are no charges from withdrawing from an ATM machine. Most major banks charge around 2.75%. We always use it as we travel several times a year and have saved lots of pennies, which is what MSE is all about.

Did you try another machine at a different bank? Can't see how they would be linked so it ought to work - up to your CARD maximum.0 -
The Multibancos in the Algarve would only allow a withdrawal of 200 euros per day. That's all I could take out when I was there, just back the other day.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0
