Need a new aerial.

I need a digital aerial fitting as my old one is an analogue one.
Is there anything in particular I need to know because although I hate to admit it, I think I'm very gullible to the salesmans patter.
I went out for a new tv on Saturday and came back with all sorts of stuff New scart lead and some fancy Monster theatre "thing".
I will be ringing round for quotes today but am worried about what they might try and flog me because I know nothing about aerils.
If they tell me I need the top of the range one as I'll get a better reception then I would have no reason to doubt them.
This is how I ended up with the extras on Saturday.
It makes me feel sick to think that I am now stuck with these extras.
Thanks

First of all, there is no such thing as a " digital " aerial, an aerial is an aerial, the required size of a TV aerial depends very much on your location.

If you are near to a good transmitter you will only require a basic TV Aerial, however if you are some distance away, a bigger one will be required.

A rough guide would be to look at your neighbours aerials, ask them what their digital reception is like.

    Hope that helps.
  • Sorry Inactive, I recently upgraded my parents to a Digital aerial when they started to lose signal and they are now getting a much better picture & quality.

I found out about the need to upgrade when talking to an aerial fitter 'friend of a friend' about the bad signal they were getting. He works for and recommended a new company which comes round and gives you a free quote - Aerialforce who are a new business but seem to have done a fab job on my parents signal.

Unfortunately I didn't get a 'mate rate' but the fitter went over the day after I called (it was late afternoon) and they had a better signal sorted in time for neighbours - before the new aerial was fitted they did a system check to see what needed replacing.

I think you can get a fitter from them in most areas of the UK (my parents are 100 miles from me) so I would definitely recommend them - not sure if they are the cheapest they were using top end stuff but they definitely did the job very well.

AAAGGGHHH ! there is NO SUCH THING as a "digital" aerial ! you might well need a higher gain, more directional aerial than for analogue TV (because the digital signal is weaker) - but the aerial is the same !!!!

If this is SPAM, it's pretty poor SPAM to boot !

No doubt they needed a new aerial, you will be able to tell us what the difference is between a digital aerial and an ordinary one, seeing as you have just had one fitted and were talking to an aerial fitter 'friend of a friend'.

Inactive is spot on - "digital aerial" indeed.

You may have a perfectly acceptable signal at the moment.

What are you trying to achieve?
    Get freeview?
Have you got a box or an integrated TV?

If you haven't got a box there is a thread hereabouts where there is one for under £13.

You could always buy that - plug it in and see what you can receive.

Because my original one was about the goods I had bought from C.... and returning them.
This thread was about buying a new aerial.
Seem different topics really but as I am not experienced at posting and I am still finding my way around this site, I thought I would do them separately so they were easier for others to read.
Sorry if I have broken some golden rule.:o
