Feel silly asking but have I bought things that I don't need?

My telly went bust yesterday and I always said that once that went I wouldn't get another.
2 hours later I became the owner of a Samsung LCD tele.
I bought one off display with 20% discount and the lad said I would get a better picture and use less electric with this device that looks like a flashy version of one of those things you plug lots of plugs in. It's called Monster Power - Home Theatre Power Centre.
He aslo persuaded me I needed a new scart lead.
I went home and tried to set this plug and play tv up but I can only get 6 channels.
I have a really old Sky dish and an ordinary aerial.
My old tele used to run via the sky dish even though I now don't subscribe to sky.
A neighbour said I fell for the salesmans patter and that really I should get a new digital aeriel as I 'm going to need one for the changeover anyway and take the Power Centre and the scart lead back.
What are my options?

Currys. Comet or PC World I bet.;)
Sounds like their usual sales tactics.
No reason why your new TV should not work with your Sky system.
Yes take the over priced Scart Lead and Power Centre back.0 -
Thanks Inactive

Yes it was one of those.
I know they see you coming when you go in there but it's hard to know whether you do need the stuff "to get a better reception and clearer picture" or if it's just sales patter.
I had to just about tear the boxes in half to get the stuff out of them as they were fastened with studs.
Will they still take them back?
The sky system I have is donkeys years old and I have been told it's an analogue one.
I've plugged the Sky lead into the back of the telly and it just says No signal.
If I plug the TV aerial in I can get the 6 channels -BBC1/2/3 CCBC and 2 others.
I am really into the foootball as I have 2 sons who usually come round and watch it but missing most of the games now.
Thanks again.NSK Zombie # SFD 7/15 Food Bank £0/£5

If you can get 6 channels, then you do need an aerial upgrade, that should bring in the rest of the channels, subject to your location.
An " analogue " Sky receiver will not work I'm afraid.
Not sure if they will take them back now you have opened them.0 -
I had the same problem as you...
on your remote there should be a button that says TV/DTV you need to press that one to get the "digital" channels.
I thought my tv was broken until I did that and sure enough there they were.
When I press TV I get the old analogue channels but if you press the DTV button the digital ones are there or at least tunable.0 -

Kittyboo is getting the " digital " channels ie; CBBC etc, she is not getting all of them.
There are only 5 analogue channels.0 -

Can they refuse if I have the original packaging?
Not sure if they will take them back now you have opened them.
Thanks for all of your replies.
I either need to bite the bullet now and get the aerial done and enjoy the tv or find out about returning it.
I imagine this to be a right battle.NSK Zombie # SFD 7/15 Food Bank £0/£5

Just looked at their tv's and lo and behold there is the same blooming thing at £399 with 5 years warranty AND free delivery.
Mine was £479.99 but got 20% discount cos it was off display.
Still theirs is a better deal.
I am now going to fish the bubble wrap out of the bin and wrap the lot up and take it back.
They did offer to beat any other cheaper price I got which I suppose if I kept theirs then it would go towards the cost of the aerial.
(I think I'm a coward and daren't take theirs back - I need to find some courage - has anyone got any to spare)
I'll keep you updated on what happens with this.
