Evans Halshaw - Price Promise my as*

I need some advice after my experience with Evans Halshaw. I was in a Toyota garage yesterday and found a great Celica for £6995 (reduced from £8495). Today i was set to buy the car when i saw an identical car closer to home in Evans Halshaw for £8995. They advertise this price promise so i decided to see what sort of deal they can do for me. I knew it was a big drop in price and just wanted a simple yes or no answer to the question can you match the deal? The sales person spoke to the manager and we had to go through the usual procedure and soon he asked if i wanted to go for a test drive. I said to the sales person, yeah i guess but only if you can price match the quote otherwise there’s no point. He told me the manger is generating the offer so i agreed to go for a drive thinking they could actually offer me something. 2hrs later since my arrival they finally sat me down and went through the figures. The car was reduced to £8500 but then add warranty, petrol & admin fees we were back to over the original cost of the car of £8995! So i asked about the price promise? the manager said its the best he can do....
So is this not false advertising??? They state "Price Promise Guaranteed" yet they can match it. The cars were exactly the same; there was no issue with that. Im not even that bothered about buying from Evans Halshaw but the fact that they took the mick giving me next to nothing for my part ex to make it look like a rubbish deal and making me wait 2 hrs for absolutely nothing. I would have been happy if they just told me right at the start that they couldn’t match the deal.
There probably nothing you can do, its just so frustrating that they had no intention right from the start to price match my quote. I guess part of me wants to get back at them for laughing at my quote and sue them for false advertising.
It states on the car windscreen that if I find the same car cheaper within 5 days then Evans Halshaw would give you back the difference as a aprt of their "Price Promise Guaranteed". Technically I could buy the car at full price and then claim it back… but im sure they will find some way of scr*wing me over.
Any advice on what I could do would be great.

Do they have a head office, if so I would get in touch and complain and then contact trading standards if you get nowhere... I wouldn't expect much to be done whatever you do, so may just be better to live and learn...
I too would want to get them for lying, but then IMHO 99% of car dealers are dishonest....

Afraid I don't really understand. You have found a car you like for a price you like. Now you want to create yourself a load of bother trying to get someone else to sell you the same car for the same price. Why would you bother? Surely you buy the first car and are happy they have offered you a good deal. Even if you get Evans to drop the price you will still feel unhappy about the car. Evans lose out and you get the car you want at the price you want, seems simple to me.0

Um, yeah? Isn't life much too short to be so angry with a business for trying to make money? Go for it at the price that's right for you, but don't take it personally.... Does it really matter?0 -
Wouldn't there be more get out clauses with secondhand cars and a price match? Two secondhand cars are unlikely to have the same mileage and date of registration. With a new car you could get a price match easier as the playing field is level. The man without a signature.0

Whilst you are right that "life is too short", the "at a business for trying to make money" bit detracts massively from your point....
Just because a business is trying to make money, shouldn't mean that they can say whatever they want in their adverts / make any promises they want and then not honour them....
If they say they will match a price, they should honour it, end of story!
As the post above says though, i'm sure the cars can't be 100% identical (I would doubt two cars in the whole world are identical) which gives them a get out clause...0 -
Just letting off some steam i suppose. They didnt really have an excuse in terms of the cars matching:
Model: Both 1.8 premium
Year: Apr 03(Evans Halshaw), Jan 04 (Toyota)
Mileage: 48000(Evans Halshaw), 47000(Toyota)
Extras: Both leather seats, climate control etc
The Toyota car was actually newer and had less mileage so in a way they had to price match it. The only difference was the type of spoiler.
But yeah the car at the Toyota garage was better in every way but i guess it was the fact that they are advertising that they will price match and they couldnt even come close to matching the quote from Toyota. Its the principal of it more than anything.0 -
well as you've just said they are different, so don't have to price match...0

Op, since posted above, I too would like to know if the deal from Toyota is such a good deal, why not just buy from them rather than mess around with Evan$ Hal$haw con men...0
