You need to explain what you mean by "initial welcome page".

Do you mean a Windows screen, or a splash screen with the PC maker's name on it or something else?

Do you see any error messages on the screen at all?

Most important question is what OS are you running, cant give any real effective advice without that nugget of information.

    Hi Fwor,

After start up, where the coloured band runs along horizontially under windows, the screen then turns blue, but then nothing  no error messages just a blue screen.

It's a bit unusual to get the blue screen (often referred to as the Blue Screen Of Death) without an error message - though the messages are often not very helpful.

The fact that Windows starts to load means it's not a commplete hard drive failure. Can you recall what you last did with the PC before the problem happened - for example did you have to force it to shut down?

Do you have a Windows installation CD? If so, probably the best thing to try would be to repair your existing Windows installation.

[just saw your post about using Windows 98 - are you sure about that?]

If your still on windows 98, I would recommend an upgrade...its a seriously poor OS

Best options are boot in safe mode to see if that will load, or do a repair install as suggested by Fwor.

Could I use a friends windows cd or does each cd relate only to each computer?
