I find though that the veggies don't store that well from Lidl, so if you are buying in bulk to last a week or whatever, you might find a lot of things turning rather quick. Then again that's maybe cos I'm in NI and we have the transport issue to deal with as opposed to direct from central suppliers in England??

I'm in Wales, and find the veggies very good quality, and last nearly a week (we've probably eaten them all before the week is up!). But I do dig down into the boxes under the boxes..if you get me...in my mind its fresher down there!!

  • I love Aldis, never had any bad products from there, they are SUCH good value. I shop this way - I get my meat from the butchers, and all my other shopping at Aldi's and Farm Foods (next door) and find this by far the cheapest way to do it, without compromising quality.

I like - cereals (meusli and special K-type cereal), yogurts, loo roll, wash tablets, tinned stuff, olive oil, cold meats, cheeses, Norpack (a Lurpack spreadable type butter) - loads more, they just spring to mind.

  • I go to Lidls occasionally, their stuff compares well to similar shops like Aldi - good quality at very low prices. I usualy comeout of there with a full basket but I particularly buy their dishwasher powder/salt/rinse aid - my new DW recommends that you do not use the tablets for best results so I have switched back to the powder method. Rediscovered Lidl's in the process!

Lidls bread mixes, ciabatta sunflower bread, mixed seed bread and a couple more are great for 89p, just add water and they make about 2 x 1lb loaves. the ciabatta is especially to die for.
Bottled cherries (£1ish) great to make cherry jelly.
Their vodka/gin/white rum is great to use for sloe gin/chilli vodka etc
mini jaffa cakes 49p a bag yum yum
fruit and veg, ours last quite a while
ground coffee (expresso in black tins) very good.
think my OH eats about 3 tubs of ice cream a week from ther too (bad)
  • They do a lovely frozen yoghurt called wellness for 99p with 3 seperate little servings, the doner kebabs for an indoors takeaway are good, just add some of their halfprice lettuce and cucumber. The bread flour is the best one i have used. I try and use them and then nip over to icelands, but lately as I have been going to lidl on a sunday and iceland isn't open then I'm finding I can manage just by going to lidl.
The 100% fruit juice (grape) is good, all the cooked meats are delish! I use the 74% chocolate for cooking its perfect and about 47p.
  • Sounds to me like Lidl on the mainland has a bigger choice than here in NI, I've never seen bread mixes or frozen yoghurt
  • Just been reading Minervas thread re Lidls. Theres a Lidls in the next town to me but am interested in Netto as we have a Netto here. Been a few times but only ever bought J2O drink and coconut milk for curries. Can anyone please recommend whats decent to buy from Netto? Been spending FAR too much money £80-£100 a week for 3 of us!!! Thats with lots of wine..been going to Waitrose or Sainsburys...

I have been inspired by the threads on Old Style to cut down!!!

Any tips would be most welcome,,thanks

Can't beat the butter beans at 22p a tin! And I agree with the people who've recommended the European Christmas products like panettone and stollen (which I don't think actually does have an umlaut over the "o", but I could be wrong).

I have German friends who shop at Lidl for certain products that are difficult to find at reasonable prices at other British supermarkets - especially certain sliced meats, sausages, biscuits and sweets.

Has anybody tried the speciality spirits - 4 different varieties of fruit schnapps (pear, cherry, raspberry and plum), grappa, and wheat schnapps? I bought a bottle of each recently (and now have no overspend buffer for the next 3 months :rotfl: ) but probably won't open them for several months, as it tends to be over the summer that my social life involves interesting alcoholic beverages! Does anybody know if I've made a good buy?

The Lidl Aldi and Netto discussions have all been merged into one thread as they are all similar. This thread is now being moved to shop but don't drop as it is about saving money on your groceries but not necessarily Old Style ;)
