Just for you (not the miserable buggers). I will assume you have XP. All my machines have Professional I will assume it's the same for XP Home.
Start
Connect to
Show all connections
Create new connection, next
Set up an advanced connection
Accept incoming connections
Select your dial in modem (not ADSL modem etc)
Do not allow virtual private connections
Add a user with a very complex password (to stop the MSE hackers getting into your system)
Highlight all the Networking software protocols (I did say I was an amateur)
(I think you should only need TCP/IP but it didn't work for me until I selected all the protocols. Just means you would be able to browse the PC etc).
Finish
Ensure your modem is plugged in when you want to receiving dial in access (and unplugged when you want to keep the hackers out).
Do you know how to make a dial up connection from the 'client' i.e. laptop (or other) dialing into your geographical number? Most people know how to do this as it was common place before ADSL auto install. I will post if you ask nicely.
I am a sarcastic git, thought I'd throw that in. Too much larger perhaps. Before you buy Google Nest or British Gas Hive check out ESPproMon the Android and iOS Smartphone app that helps you build the same system from just £30.0 -

5. i have a PCMCIA card moden which taken a sim card and the ISP can be dialled from there too

thank you
You need an ADSL link to the internet at home with a PC attached. Or you need a good friend with the same who will let you dial into their system. You need someone with a VOIP router, ideally, as they will not really be using their telephone line. You have everyting else you need. See post above for configuring the 'server'.Before you buy Google Nest or British Gas Hive check out ESPproMon the Android and iOS Smartphone app that helps you build the same system from just £30.0 -

hmm very interesting. i like it, yes i do. i can see the advantage to neighbours and such who don't want to pay a monthly fee for dialup access. I suppose you could charge them say a fiver or something, that would make you some pocket money and maybe even cover any charges for having to use your mobile instead of your landline.
Also, to take the idea further, you could install some answering machine type software on yoru pc that could either accept or reject internet calls so unwanted people who havne't paid can't try to access the net. LOL.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that can see the merit in this suggestion. I have had some very negative responses but you will always get that I suppose. Before you buy Google Nest or British Gas Hive check out ESPproMon the Android and iOS Smartphone app that helps you build the same system from just £30.0 -
Stabilo,
I used an 02 number for my moms internet connection, and 1899.
I only ever found 3
one was a telewest one (well actuallly theirs lots, however they do hide them, from memory thier on https://www.blueyonder.co.uk > help > contact us > dial up support > and then select a list of the access numbers half way down the page,, their is even a sheffield one whcih i used (being in sheffield)
The other was a US one which used 1899 to dial into for free and connect like that, i cant think what it was called now, but will check when i get home from university.
The third was clairnet, they dont advertise it now but it was an 02 number and worked good for quite some time.
HTH's
And i love the idea of using your interenet connection to dail into good thinking.
BTW if your in sheffield why dont you just get blueyonder, you can have it without a phone line and save £10 pp0 -

Glad someone else likes the idea.
I don't want to discuss possible access numbers in an open forum for obvious reasons, suffice to say they are not really guaranteed to be available when needed.
I believe the cheapest current overseas destination with 18XXX is Germany at 0.5p/min. Dialling a German ISP at 0.5p/min can still mount up over a year.
If you run your own ISP the one to one support is likely to be better and no 09XXX support calls:j .
I actually live NEAR Sheffield and there are no cable providers in our 'village'. Broadband only arrived about four weeks ago.
Good luck with the PAP2.Before you buy Google Nest or British Gas Hive check out ESPproMon the Android and iOS Smartphone app that helps you build the same system from just £30.0
