Not since April 2006 when the laws changed. Prior to that, if a credit card company want to take your house, it involved a lot of court time, and even then they would struggle as they would have to prove you were avoiding paying.

Now they just print out a list of names, addresses and amounts, take it to the local magistrates court, fill in one form for the entire "batch" and get it rubber stamped by the clark of the court. And Bingo, they have your house!

This was introduced VERY QUIETLY in April 2006. In fact, it was so quiet is is in fact a massive scandal, but no-one has covered.

You keep spouting this rubbish and every time you've been asked to provide a source you suddenly go quiet. The simple fact of the matter is that no law has been changed at all.

The whole thing has been a nightmare to be honest. Before we married I was living in a one bedroomed flat on benefits. I have a serious and chronic illness making it impossible to work. We could not afford to get married or live together but naively thought 'love will find a way!'

Any sympathy I had for you disappeared straight out of the window as soon as I read that.

You claim to have this "serious and chronic illness making it impossible to work" but yet you can clearly bash out posts in well-written English on internet forums without any problem so you could also do data-input work from home quite easily.

Another one who simply doesn't want to work and expects to live a lifestyle beyond their means. No sympathy.

Yes. If you own your own house there is no such thing as unsecured debt. A quick trip to the court turns that unsecured debt into a secured one in 2 mins.

I normally lurk but have to answer this! I also have a serious and chronic illness that makes work outside the home impossible, and I've been trying for over a year now to get work from home that isn't a scam. Most data entry, envelope stuffing, etc is not done from home anymore. If I could find one that isn't a scam, I'd be doing it because we really need the money right now! I'm university educated, with a 2:1 degree in law and sociology, but willing to do pretty much anything, but work from home is hard to find. I'm currently increasing my experience with voluntary charity fundraising in the hope of getting a paid job doing that, but I need at least a year's experience, preferrably two, before anyone will even consider me for that.

So please, don't talk about what you don't understand. I'd swap the crippling and debilitating pain I suffer for a job ANY day of the week.

Can you write articles about things (places, holidays, household items, toys, etc?)

There is always work for people who can do that. It's hard to find someone who can churn out blurbs at enough of a rate to make a decent income though.

They've always been able to do this. The only difference is that this "change" if you can call it that, just made it easier for them to get charging orders.

This isn't the change that SquatNow is on about anyway. He's on about a ficticious one that never happened.

Woozle - your original question asked about dropping the price. You can make an application to the court using form N244 to ask to lower the asking price. There will be a £75.00 court fee or £40.00 if you can get the other side to agree to it. Depending on your circumstances you may be entitled to fee remission - have a look at this leaflet for more info. The court will then list it for a hearing where you can explain the situation but ultimately it is the judges decision.

As an aside charging orders have always been a common method of securing a CCJ it just seems that more people are talking about them now x x
