Slamming

Options
Three weeks ago telephone connection 'slammed' by Talk Talk away from BT. Never spoke to anyone, and never received the letter BT are supposed to send asking to contact them if we did not want to leave them. Consequently, the 'phone line was taken during an Internet session. Home telephone taken by Talk Talk, Internet connection/Broadband ceased. Taken over 3 weeks to BT to sort it out, although BT have tried to charge us for cancelling our Contract with them (which of course we did not). Reported it to Ofcom. Both husband and myself totally stressed. Wondering if we can sue anyone.

Why & for what reasons would you sue?
  • Because normanmark - we have been 3 weeks without an Internet connection, which is totally unacceptable, considering we did not request moving from BT. I feel BT had a duty of care to inform us of the request from Talk Talk. They are good at sending emails advertising their products, perhaps an email would have been nice! Plus we had nothing from Talk Talk, not even the courtesy of a phone call. Most people use the Internet for Banking, Shopping etc. This ceased for three weeks, and believe me it has been a real uphill struggle to get reinstated. We live in a village and it is not easy to get to the Bank etc.

Unless you can categorise the loss of internet as crucial to your life then you wouldn't get much in terms of suing. God knows why this country has this crazy suing culture now?!

All you can do at this stage is report them to Ofcom, get their advice on any next step. Also get on to BT for them to restart the contract and line for you.

You would be lucky to get a minimal ammount of compensation for the loss, not exactly life threatening to lose BB for a while to be honest.

Your issue is with TalkTalk not BT, they are the ones that slammed you without any authority, also you say in your initial post that BT did write but you never received the letter so they did try to contact you though the letter went astray, I believe there have been instances where people have successfully sued TalkTalk.
  • Thanks guys. Guess stress doesn't count for much! Just hope it doesn't happen again.
  • Forgot, BT have charged us £195 for cancelling contract - which of course we didn't.

Thats why i said to chase them with it, you should have this sorted by now rather than sitting & waiting on a forum's opinions on the matter. Call BT tomorrow & say how can they charge you a cancellation charge when you've been slammed.
  • Normanmark I think you have the opinion that we have not been screaming and shouting at BT! We certainly have. We must have spoken to about 9 different departments over this. Everything was taken away at one fell swoop, but different departments have to be contacted to have everything reinstated. We have sorted it out, we are capable of doing it ourselves, just posted on the forum in case someone else had had the same problem, and would be an ally in my utter exasperation.

Did you find out who had slamed your line? It isn't BT that should be re-imbursing your connection fees etc but the company that tried to take your line. BT carried out a process, somewhere somehow this got kicked off through slamming so even though BT were part of this they were not the direct cause.
