The £500 the CAB have asked from you is not for them it is for your court and OR's fee's. The CAB is a charitable trust and do not ask for money.
Do you own a house? How much is it worth? How much of the mortgage is left? What are you're incomings? What are your out goings? Are they all/mostly business debts? Please give us some more details of your situation.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -
If you have googled the cab sometimes debt companies trying to dupe people with their names being similar to the cab. The cab would not ask for any money from you because they offer free advice.0

I am a volunteer at the CAB and have been on relevant training courses so I can deal with debt etc, but because I only work one day a week, I do not have the time to deal with writing to creditors etc so this is why we pass it on to a debt caseworker who are paid and work more hours. I can often help clients go down the self-help route and will show them how to make pro-rata offers to creditors and help them write a relevant letter. Volunteers are supervised by paid supervisors who have a wealth of knowledge and I will always double check with them if i am not sure.
If a client is not happy with advice the bureaus have a complaint system which we would rather you use so we can see where we are going wrong and could be offered extra training.
Personally I love helping clients and I get more good clients than difficult ones. The difficult clients include people who haven't brought the relevant paperwork like a tenancy agreement that we have asked them to bring in and start shouting at me saying I am useless. I always remain polite and offer them a new appointment, but it does upset me at times, but thankfully it is rare.
I know that people have been given the wrong advice by the cab but if you're not happy ask for a second opinion. We now have a benefits check on our computer system which helps us give a more accurate estimate on what you should be entitled to.0 -
Hi All,
One of the main problems the cab has is that we offer face to face advice on everything. CCCS and national debt line only deal with debt and only on the phone ( although in the main give excellent advice )
About 40% of our work is debt, the rest could be sorting benefit problems ( interview under caution possibly ), faulty goods, housing disrepair, illegal eviction, land and neighbour disputes, employment disputes, dismissals, employment tribunal representation, immigration / asylum seeker issues, leave to remain in the UK issues, complaints and action against the police, family issues such as parental rights and custody issues, the list really goes on for ever !
I like many in the CAB have worked on all of the above. Athough I am as you know a debt caseworker, I do sometimes sit as !!! ( nice term ! ) which is advice session supervisor. It is in this area where any poor quality advice could happen if the !!!' (s) are not being effective. In our bureau every volunteer must place every enquiry before the !!!, even if that vol is known to be excellent and been with us for 20 years ! At the end of the session every written case record is checked by an !!! who did not authorise the original enquiry. If an error is noted then the client is contacted.
This is a good system, but not perfect, I m afraid that sometimes mistakes do happen, for which ultimately we have insurance for.
So as we all know on here the debt 'epidemic' has put great pressures on debt charities ( CCCS, NDL and CAB ) but when you think that we spend 60% of our time on things other than debt, then maybe its understandable why we are so hard to get to see !
Cabs across the country are under threat from funding cuts, private profit making bids, etc and to be honest, unless our national organisation 'gets a grip':o then I feel the future of CABx is in serious doubt.
Best
DD
