To summarise this thread and save anyone else from having to read all 10 pages of it:

Someone tries to make a fast buck by betting that house prices will keep on rising. They don't and the bet loses. And then that someone tries to welch on the bet.

    Harsh but true I think

fatpig - what unhelpful posts - avicola knows full well she made poor decisions - this forum is about trying to help people who are trying to help themselves (as she is) and Not about ridiculing folks

if you manage to get thru life without being conned by smooth-talking-salesmen - then - and only then - could you afford to be so darned smug

I think it is fair for me to point out that the developers 'welched' on the deal by completing 2 years later than they were contracted to. That actually made a significant difference.

But there we go. More fool me. As I have said, I will just have to accept the consequences as decided by law.

Thanks to the people who have offered constructive advice and moral support. It has significantly helped and it is wholly appreciated.

When I have solid news, I will post it. Until then, I will leave the site for a bit.
I had hoped my continuing to post might help anyone in a similar situation, but instead it is seeming to generate some bitterness.

I would suggest to anyone else who wants to comment that I am mad, bad and stupid there is no point posting it, as we all completely agreed on that ages ago. And for heavens sake, don't keep reading.

""I am mad, bad and stupid" - not a bit of it - gal - not a bit of it !!!!!!

ignore the negheads - in fact - go on - i dare you - put them on ignore - and you will never have to read them again !! makes life sooo much pleasanter now that i dont have to read .... xx and yy and mm ....

smooth talking salesmen are very clever - and they only con the genuine folks - other con merchants see them coming and dont get involved......

    bw avi -

stay cool and do keep popping in

    just to amuse you

i ROARED in natwest today !!! and boy did i enjoy it ...

some fraudulent scurrilous piece of animal excrement has hacked into my paypal account and removed £1,892.11 from it - my "linked" bank - the quill-pen-wielding-Dickensian institution known as NatWEst - didn't do beggar all and said "speak to our fraud squad" who said " nowt to do with us guv - talk to paypal"

At lease paypal helped me change my password/security etc and said i should print off my paypal account to show the bank that it was a fraudulent transaction so that i need not pay unauthorised overdraft fees. i then phoned my branch of natwest who said "yes - bring in a print out and all will be well"

    Was it

    a) well ?
    b) unwell ?
    c) total waste of my time energy and thought ?

    (c) might be half way there

Went to NW today - who then refused to accept my print out as prooof and gave me their fraud squad number and told me to go home and that i could not have any money as i was over my overdraft limit !!!

thats when the ROARING started !!!

everyone in the bank by this time was nodding as i was ranting - Very loudly

"I AM NOT THE ONE IN THE WRONG HERE !"

finally the manager came to calm me down and he finally agreed to let me have some dosh

mates cheered me up today and so now i can be philosophical about it - but - your heart sinks to your feet when you feel stolen from, degraded, invaded and angry ... and you always think it will happen to someone else

when i finally got into my paypal account there had been another fraudulent attempt at getting 4000 euros from my account - but that failed - thank goodness

chin up clutton - tomorrow is another day !!

    Hi Kez100.

Yup, still here. Thanks for asking. Hopefully with August almost over, we will get some news soon. Have stopped worrying so much, so smiling more.

Clutton, I am absolutely shocked to read that. Just when you expect the support of a company or business you trust, they let you down. I hope you can get it sorted out. These hackers are just so determined and whilst I don’t like the word ‘evil’ it does spring to mind.

Thanks for your suggestion regarding the ignore list. I didn’t know it existed. It is a good option, and probably a necessity at times. I don’t like to deny people their opinion, but since I don’t want to give all my personal details that led to this, I think sometimes that leads people to inevitably get the wrong end of the stick.

hi avi - thanks for your concern - yes i will get the money back - and i did get a grovelly apologetic letter from the manager of my local NW bank today !! so ranting did some good - i could feel a "grumpy old woman" moment coming on as i walked into that bank !!!!

we can all be conned in differing ways in this life - and i wrote about my small-beer experience just to show that we are all vulnerable in so many ways - and judging others is not helpful

    happy weekend avi !!

Through paypals helpful staff - i have learned that one way they may have hacked into my account is by getting my password from a less secure site (maybe an internet forum) and then assuming that i used the same password for everything and tried it - and hey presto they got into my paypal account.

i was advised to not use a password which can be found in a dictionary - so jumbled up figures and numbers makes it a whole lot harder for hackers; and its best to use different passwords for sensitive money sites..... good advice for us all
