Silver Charming - quite agree with you. In your position I would be wondering if the Council was planning to develop that land? What - now? - in the current economic climate? Who would want it?

They can't develop it, I don't think, because it's public land and the walls of the garden itself is protected.

It makes me so angry, especially as the walled garden volunteers have painstakingly made the rest of the area neat and enjoyable for those who perhaps aren't into gardening.

I am seriously considering turning my website into a kind of discussion space / hub type of thing for this kind of issue. If I did would any of you consider contributing?

You need to pop over to

there was a guy on there that has his allotment taken away and many people on there went ballistic and helped him get another one on the same site. Sort of a crusade, I can see this being the same.

Well...I would be broadly in favour of that. The reservation being that I noticed the word "parks" in there included under the heading of land that could potentially be used. To be happy with this idea - then parks need to be removed from consideration - as that is land that is accessible to and used by all the population potentially. Whereas land that has been turned into allotments is only used by the allotmenteers themselves and would not then be accessible for leisure purposes by other people. Visions of irate allotmenteers coming to mind as people sat picnicking etc on land that used to be parkland - because it still should be.............errrr....I'd be amongst the ones with a picnic basket to hand enjoying the bit of land that was still supposed to be available for us ALL.

Oh well....bitta urban self-sufficiency stuff being worked on here....I've got myself a "Patiogro" now and currently standing there looking at it nervously. Anyone got any experience of using one of these? What are you growing/have grown in them if so?

EDIT: SilverCharming - went to your homepage for a looksee on current developments and see you've got that page up about closed - due to sabotage still. Hows it going? Have you got another blog address?

This patiogro thingy, how is it different to pots on the patio? Good if you don't have much space on a balcony, although a bit vulnerable to wind I would have thought.
Just the same as growing in any pots ceridwen. What are you going to put in there?

Well - it weighs 12.5 kg and is made from heavy steel - so hopefully the wind wont stand a chance at blowing it over:D

I'm thinking salads and perhaps edible flowers basically. I've made out a list of things that apparently can be grown in a 4" depth of soil and put it on my "Gardening Notes" blog - partly because I was thinking about what to grow in stuff like this. I've got seeds for various things already - so will try them - bit of a shame that I have in some ways - as I see they also sell packets of seeds (as in obviously plants designed for shallow depth soil) - so, looking down their list, the seeds I'd be after (if I wasnt already stocked-up) include: peppers, radishes, baby leaf salad, rocket. I see theres even a dwarf runner bean (says it grows to 30cm) - so I might contemplate buying a packet of their runner bean seeds at some point.

The point of this thing to me is that its a bit of vertical gardening - ie I'll be able to get more plants into the space by "stacking" them like this and the readymade covers looked like they'd hopefully be easy to deal with - and grow stuff for a larger part of the year than I'd otherwise be able to. I look enviously at things like polytunnels - but theres no way I'd be able to contemplate any of them in my set-up - so thought hopefully this should work for me in the same sorta way.

No, it's the same address... I started working on it yesterday then lost my internet connection for about five hours  then didn't have time to go back to it. I'm hopefully going to get it licked into shape this weekend...

Is it big? Those trays don't look deep enough for carrots and leeks etc but looks good for salad leaves and radish.
