Refused Bank Account - how to appeal

Hi All, can anyone offer me some advice?

I have been refused a current account from the co-op. I already have a cashminder account and a pathminder account with them.

I use the pathfinder account like a current account my wages go in and I pay my bills from it i've had the account for about 10 years. In the past there have been problems on the account withe returned DD's etc. However the account has been running smoothly for approx 3 years.

I should also add that I have clocked up a number of defaults and CCJ's within the last 6 years so my credit file is not the best. All my debts have been paid now.

I have a mortgage which is always paid on time along with a car loan. I also have a vanquis card which is paid in full each month.

The Co-op have said I can appeal but what evidence etc. should I use to appeal.

Thanks

  • when i rang coop recently to see if they would upgrade my cashminder account i was told that there is a marker on my account regarding credit history, no details given about how long it will be there though,

Maybe your account has the same marker on there

thanks, I would have thought that running an account with them for 3 years with no problems at all would be enough. In the letter they do say they have reviewed my existing accounts with them along with credit reference agencies.

I have recently opened an account with an online banking service who approve anyone for a bank account with a prepay Mastercard. There are companies who charge for prepay credit cards, but this is all included. Give them a go:

Check your credit history - if the reports are clean then consider moving from the Coop to a bank that will give you what you want.

If the report is not clean then there is not a great deal that you can do.

I also have the same problem with Coop. I did apply twice to upgrade my cashminder account to a normal current account and never got reply or explanation but it was clear that I was refused. So I have complained for not getting answers, which they apologise for, and advise me that I should apply for a current account separately and only after that ask to replace the cashminder account by a new current account (in case you get the approval). Never really applied, as I’ve decided to move on because in 3 years with them never got any benefits or facilities even thought that my salary (higher average) was paid into coop account.
I’ve applied with RBS, got a current account with chequebook, but only with cashline card, with a promise to get an upgrade in 3 months if my wages get paid into that account. Paid in first salary and got a letter to come for review; didn’t yet pop into the branch as I work overseas and currently away.
My advice: If you want to build up a relationship with a bank, move away from Cooperative Bank! They’re out there many banks that do appreciate peoples with permanent income even with adverse credit history in the past and willing to give peoples second chances.
  • Co-Operative Bank? Pah! UnCo-Operative Bank more like. The most useless bank I have ever dealt with, and I have dealt with a few over the last thirty years!

Your problem here is your credit file I feel. The fact that you have defaults makes you a financial leper I am afraid. I have been in the same position, and with the Co-Op too.

Defaults stay on your credit file for a period of six years from the date that the default notice is issued. As far as banks and credit card companies are concerned, defaults are as bad as CCJ's.

I did, however, get an account with Citibank with £100 cheque/visa debit card, cheque book and £500 interest free overdraft, whilst I still had a couple of defaults. Admittedly this was pre credit crunch, so I don't know if they have altered their criteria. https://www.citibank.co.uk

Beware though, that banks/credit card companies do not like to see multiple searches on your credit file.

My credit file is shot includes a bancrupcy, and shall have been with the coop 6 years in october. The bancrupcy should be off my file in October and all the other stuff. What annoys me though is I have applied to open a savings account because of the convieniece of it being with my cashminder account for instant transfers and they will not even allow that, i mean its not as if you can get overdrawn with a savings account grr. I have never once mucked up my cashminder account and i have a good income going into it each month. They treat you like you've got the plague.

Just to let you know I have appealed the Co-Ops decision today on the following basis - will let you know what happens

I refer to your letter of the 6th June 2008. I am disappointed that you have decided that you are unable to open a Privilege current account.

As set out in your letter I do not agree with your decision and would like you to reconsider on the following basis
    • We have been loyal customers of the Co-operative bank for a number of years and use the pathfinder account as our main account.
    • All accounts that we hold with yourselves are kept in credit and do not go overdrawn.
    • I understand that we have faced financial difficulties in the past however these have all been resolved.
    • We are not asking to have a credit facility with yourselves but merely to have a current account with cheque book and debit card.
    • Currently we save £XXX per month into my employers Share schemes, £XX into a Legal and General ISA.
