Double check there are no gaps around windows etc,if there is get some insulating tape or sealant from poundland or B&Q.
Use silver insulating foil behind radiators as it is supposed to increase efficiency of raditors, heavy curtains with insulated lining in main room, draught excluder at door.
If that doesnt work then theres nothing wrong with wearing a hat and/or coat indoors.I even slept in a wool beret last week for a couple of days as it was so cold here."Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0 -
The cheaper ways, rather than going all out for new double glazing and space blanket in the loft etc...
- Thick heavy curtains up at windows and doors (floor length at doors).
- Draught excluders or brushes at the bottoms of all internal doors.
- Draught dampers on keyholes & letterboxes.
- Rugs on hard floors.
- Keep all internal doors closed where possible to keep heat in individual rooms.
Hmmm... What else?... I'll get my thinking cap on.0 -
Yup totally agree with the heavy curtains on Doors our back door is a total nightmare for letting in the cold. I have my CH on for my son getting up in the morning it goes off at 9 so me and my DP just wear a fleece if we get too cold it comes back on in time for him having his bath., I am a total nightmare for shouting at them both to keep all the doors closed too.... Hope you heat up soon£2012 in 2012:

Crikey, if you have decent insulation I doubt your flat can be that cold. I'm living in a 70's-built top-floor flat with external walls on three sides with NO HEATING ON and the temp hasn't dropped below 10 degrees centigrade night or day. I'm wearing my thermal undies, thermal socks, a fleece and a fleece jacket on top and I'm as warm as toast here.
In my opinion hard floors are a b*gger for making a room feel chilly so get some warm slippers on!0 -
I've found candles help - might all be in the mind, but it seems to work for us, also be really fanatical about closing internal doors.
Hope it helps0 -

lol Could that be because heat rises and the flats below you are keeping you warm? :rotfl:0 -
oooh - and if you want to make a draught excluder to be extra thrifty use the leg of an old pair of pyjamas or trackie bottoms. Sew up the top, stuff with old rags or a mix of rags and bubble wrap with a bag of sand or something as weight, and then sew up the foot end...magic!Clearing debt to save for a simple wedding.Starting 2016 With debt of £77000

Ahh, well I see a couple of thing's I'm doing wrong. I usually keep all my internal doors open and I don't have any curtains up in the living room (only vertical blinds) and the ones I have in the bedroom are very thin. I'll also check the windows as although the flat is new it's settled in a bit since I bought it and I come to think of it the seals between the windows and the walls have probably popped a bit. With the foil behind the radiator, how would I attach it, to the wall or the radiator?
Thank you soo much everyone for your help0 -
draw your curtains as soon as it gets dark. this will help to keep the warmth in0

If you have radiators under the windows tuck the curtains behind them or you're just heating the windows :rolleyes:0
