Ahh, well I see a couple of thing's I'm doing wrong. I usually keep all my internal doors open and I don't have any curtains up in the living room (only vertical blinds) and the ones I have in the bedroom are very thin. I'll also check the windows as although the flat is new it's settled in a bit since I bought it and I come to think of it the seals between the windows and the walls have probably popped a bit. With the foil behind the radiator, how would I attach it, to the wall or the radiator?

Thank you soo much everyone for your help :)

We have foil behind all radiators and used some old wallpaper paste and glued directly to the wall. That was ages ago and it's been fine.
  • There is a really helpful thread, on this old style money saver forum, "Preparing for winter", which has loads of useful hints and tips, for keeping self and home warm. (sorry not very good at posting links)

oooh - and if you want to make a draught excluder to be extra thrifty use the leg of an old pair of pyjamas or trackie bottoms. Sew up the top, stuff with old rags or a mix of rags and bubble wrap with a bag of sand or something as weight, and then sew up the foot end...magic!

Another way - grab the rag bag and stuff some "big" adult football socks if you have some in there - i used socks, tshirts and leggings for my stuffing and folded the knee end in like a pillowcase. Needed a bit of stamping on to get rid of the bigger lumps and not a perfect fit at the door - but an almost-no--work-involved, and temporary solution :) Can go back in the rag bag ready for recycling after the cold spell. I've often used old rolled up towels too.

I second wearing layers too. Today I was wearing thick winter tights underneath trackie bottoms, thin socks then thick socks, two thin tea shirts a fleece, a beret (xmas prezzie looks hilarious as it is covered in sparkly sequins well you have to have some glamour! )my heating is only on 15 till family get in tonight. I have put hot water bottles on the sofas covered with fleece throws for them to get warmed up when they get in. Stay warm and safe everyone

My flat gets so cold too :( It heats up quite quickly, but doesn't seem to hold the heat at all. I got home early today as work closed so popped the heating on for a couple of hours, turned it off and went for a wander in town and when I got back it was lovely and warm. It's been off since, but have just had to put it back on as my feet are like blocks of ice again (and yes, I wear more socks than is normal :p) I'm tempted to go for a walk outside as at least it will feel warmer when I get back in!

Hiya, it is -10 outside:eek: from the window I can see meny people going to work in hats and scalfs.

I am sitting at the computer with coffee and hotwater bottle but will soon have to move as it is a work day for next 3 days (Christmas staff).
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

start from the inside out ie make sure that your body core is warm ie eat heating foods like porridge and thick soups with barley. A good thermal vest and maybe tights etc etc. Keep your head warm and the kidney area and neck
