Connecting to a new broadband provider!!!

STAY AWAY FROM MOBILE BROADBAND - it is the biggest con going.
Why so?
A friend of mine has just got it to enable him to connect anywhere (well more or less anywhere), but tbh he is not that savvy when it comes to this sort of technology.
I fear he may have bought a pig in a poke - but not sure why.
If I am out and about with my laptop, there seem to be plenty of places with free wi-fi that do me just fine.
I also have a wi-fi enable phone which can be useful.0 -
Often missold by stores as "like broadband" or "broadband speeds" when this is more like a flying pork in the sky claim
Poor speeds (can barely be described as broadband)
Frequent disconnections
Poor download speeds
Images are compressed so you get poor quality images (and must refresh each page or if possible alter a setting or install further software) --AND they don't tell you about this when you sign up
I could go on for ever. Best policy is to stay away from mobile broadband.0 -

Many thanks - wasn't aware of the compression issues.
I won't mention it to him until he tells me he doesn't like it!0 -
A useful site for the OP is http://www.samknows.com/broadband/
From here you will be able to find out which operators have an LLU presence at your exchange, which are often cheaper than using an ISP that rents bandwidth off BT.
You can also check what speed you are likely to get, however noone can guarantee a particular speed with ADSL it don't work like that, factors such as distance from the exchange, noise on the line, internal phone wiring all have an impact on your speed. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
BT tell me that installation costs #124.00 and you have to have a 12 month contract for their phone service, then you can migrate. I will now get back to them and ask about the 18 month contract and reduce the #124.00 fee.
Which magazine recommends Zen and Waitrose as excellent BB suppliers, is anyone here using either of these companies? You live..You learn.:)0 -
Dear Explora...
Once again thank you for your previous help re: £95 off BT home line installation.
After reading the BT website link>>>
http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=23734
It says that this calling plan should be available at £10.50 per month. yet on my first bill I dont pay that... I meet the criteria of paying by DD and Paperless billing.
So I contacted BT (INDIA!!!!) and after numerous calls of being told information i was not after the lady said that I cannot get £10.50 p/m because I got this discount £95 discount!!!
Do you know anything about this or are they just making an excuse not to give it to me????
PS Im with O2 broadband and it kicks !!!... proper fast downloads achieved on BitCommet!!! yeah!!!0 -
Dear Renegade
As long as you contacted them before 30/06/2008 you would be eligable for the discount as I was. But note my above post RE: not being able to get £10.50 Line Rental charge!!!
Hope you did get your cheap connection... I just said to them that it says I can get it coz it says so on the MONEYSAVINGEXPERT.COM website and she went and asked her boss!!!
It was so funny listen to her backtrack!!!!
Good luck:)0 -
