Hi there,
As per a news item in today's Financial Times (Sat 7th June 2008) on the front page in the top right corner, Apple will be selling new iPhone for about $200 cheaper in US. Reason given is that their current pricing strategy is unsustainable. Year to date, they have sold 1.7m units and they want to sell 10m by the year end. Credit crunch was also given as one of the reasons for a competitive price offering. It is still not clear if $200 discount will be entirely by Apple or network providers will also partially subsidise it but hey does it matter for us consumers?
So guys, watch the space.

That's excellent. If it's sold for £169 in o2 that means I can return the iPhone v1.0 that I bought less than two weeks ago and obtain an iPhone v2.0 without paying a penny!Alcohol-free to be debt-free (26/09/2014) :beer:0

I would have thought so. Fingers crossed. I don't think that an international newspaper of repute like Financial Times will publish something that is unconfirmed.0

So basically they've realised that not many people strangely enough will pay way over the odds for a poorly specced out phone because it has an apple logo on it?0

Well I'd wait until the announcements on Monday from the WWDC in the USA, keep an eye on news at Apple's website and www.macuser.co.uk Apple never leak actual details, 99% of their staff don't even know what will be released, so it's just rumour IMO.0

Wow, thanks guys. Reassuringly it appears I am not the only one! I half expected a torrent of abuse from some apple fanboy. But I suppose that would have been quite funny really. Anyway. I'll shut up now...0

There's certainly mumourings that markets like the UK which sees heavy subsidising of handsets with tariffs could see the iPhone retail for as little as £100 on O2. Apple's agenda for the year is likely to revolve around a mobile service (to replace the .mac service) so I imagine the aim is to shift a lot more units this time round.
I'd also expect a considerable improvement in the spec (3G is all but definite since it's been announced that Japan will get the iPhone v2 and they only have 3G networks). There's even talk of a smaller handset (nano esque?) too since the original was a little big for many people..."Who throws a shoe, honestly?"

Good stuff. Hopefully this time tomorrow we will at least know the specs.
I won't be surprised at the price not only because FT has published some confirmed reports but price has been a big barrier to entry and Apple is not a company like Monc Blanc with a very narrow niche in a category where pens are either like commodities or status symbols like Monc Blanc. Mobile phone as a category is a mass category and one can make more money by just offering much superior product at a small price premium and then achieving higher penetration. The key is to make sure that the product is always ahead of the curve to justify the slight price premium.0 -
