Sorry it a bit off the thread topic but I thought I would add my experience at Tesco's today regarding the DM book token.
I always use the self scan and only spent about £13. When the coupon was entered it scaned ok but approval was requested. (I guess this was because the voucher value was such a hign % of the total bill).
The assistant opened the voucher compartment (1st time for me) and looked at the voucher. She radioed customer services and asked if it was acceptable and the response was YES.
CS said they accept "national book tokens" but not "world book tokens"
Hope this helps.Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life. Terry Pratchett0 -
Also, skibster has asked what I have also wondered many times: can you use the book token for the actual book when it is already discounted? Otherwise, what is the use of the token, since you can always get it cheaper online?? And this question is yet unanswered since everyone is discussing the usage or misuse at tescos.
I've given up on getting an answer on that one; it's funny how often the coupon is discussed, yet no one knows how it works when you buy what it's actually for. It's just as well, anyway, as I went into WHSmith today and the book was full-price (8.99) despite being cheaper online, which means the coupon would still make it a bit more than I could get it for on Amazon (where I would need it to top up an order for free shipping). So I'll give up on getting a deal on a book with these coupons; I don't think it is much help in that area except for people who don't order much online.0 -

The stoooopid CS person has it the wrong way round!!!!!!!
Pretty much ALL booksellers accept World Book tokens (£1 off a book; schools promo each March) and at their own expense as well, retailers all foot the bill, Tesco included.
THE DM BOOK TOKEN IS NOT NOT NOT NOT (I SAY NOT) ACCEPTABLE IN TESCO!!
Sorry to shout but please let that be an end to the naive attempts to justify it.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

This is clearly not true because if you look back through the thread you will see that people (myself included) have used this voucher in Tesco - so clearly Tesco do accept it.Coupon-mad wrote: »

My post did not try to justify the use of the DM book token, it merely told of my experience with Tesco today.
I have never tried to justify any voucher - I simply take the view that if the retailer will accept it then I will use it.Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life. Terry Pratchett0 -
The only "NAIVE" post here is the one saying a clearly acceptable coupon is "NOT NOT NOT NOT ACCEPTABLE".
And anyone imagining that we won't be handing these £4.50 ones in (by the ton) just in case they get withdrawn later in the month is (dare I say) the only naive one around here (it's a moneysavers forum isn't it?)0 -
I think we're pretty sure that Tesco can't actually get the money back on this one, so I think what coupon mad is trying to say is that it's not (morally) acceptable to use it there.
Whether they "accept" it or not seems to be a matter for debate and I suspect those stores that are hot on what can be used and can't will know that they shouldn't really take it.
However, their tills will "accept" until a block is put on - either centrally at HQ or individually on a store by store basis. I must admit I stopped using it last month, once we were told it was blocked, but perhaps that was just in a few stores. I just thought I'll wait til the new one comes out and try that.
Tesco did stop accepting World Book Day tokens last year (probably after some people applied on behalf of clubs and ended up with over 100 each). The other National Book Tokens are like the old record tokens in that they are accepted in any book store. Neither of these are what we are actually talking about here, but I suspect that was lost over the radio and the OP was lucky.0 -

Morals don't come into this so called "abuse".
Tesco are the immoral ones in all this coupon business.
They are happy to take coupons which have been improperly tendered, with no sale of the designated product, then send them off to be reimbursed AND to add further immoral insult, they claim the handling fee off the manufacturer.
Of course they are happy to accept them - no bank charges or credit card commission to pay, plus handling fees and little chance of the staff pocketing any of them - far more profitable than acting ethically, and only accepting them within the terms stated on them.0 -

Thanks for that.
It's people like you who will get Tesco coupon policy overturned. My post was not meant to be in defence of Tesco, but in defence of the coupon policy that you and ruear seem intent on bringing to an end.
I bet you think it's OK to use Sainsburys/Somerfield/Asda money-off coupons at Tesco as well don't you? They're not acceptable either but you'll probably disagree again 'they must be OK just because they scan'.
The funny thing is I agree with what you say about Tesco - they are immoral - but can't you see what your actions will cause? Many of us rely on the coupon policy to make ends meet, anyone spoiling that is bound to cause annoyance here.
So sad to see ridiculous posts on this thread again over the weekend from peeps who haven't a clue about the long-term effect of getting away with a few days/weeks of passing dud £4.50 notes in Tesco.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

If Tescos don't want any coupons they don't have them in their system.
But they do want coupons - they are far more profitable to them than cash or credit cards.
And those using them (actually abusing them, as the users of coupons are as aware as Tesco are that they are breaking the conditions by not buying the products the coupons are for) are "buying" better products than they would be able to if the coupons weren't treated as cash. In Tesco's eyes, the better the product, the better the profit.
So on top of the straight profit they make on handling coupons instead of cash (they have to pay the bank to handle cash for them, but get paid handling fees for taking coupons), they make extra profit from the bigger shopping baskets that the abusers fill thanks to their coupons.
You say other supermarkets coupons aren't accepted at Tesco, in fact they have banners round here saying they DO want us to take in named competitors coupons (eg Morrisons spend and save).
And your suggestion we are "passing" £4.50 notes seems to be saying we are up to something.
If they don't want them they can easily block them.
In fact the advice given over which coupons are acceptable by their management is that if they are accepted by the tills, then they are happy to have them.
Your dual standard over this matter just smacks of hypocrisy.0 -

It is indeed.
But I'd prefer to save money for xxxxxxyears than make a few extra £4.50s now and no more coupons in the future, because mark my words, that is what'll happenI can be brown I can be blue I can be violet and sky. I can be hurtful I can be purple I can be anything you like..Gotta be green gotta be mean gotta be everything more...0
