Comet refund policy?

i have bought a 14inch flat screen tele from Comet last week for my brother at university. however, the accommodation he lives in have no reception at all and i have forced to return the product. the TV has only been plugged in once try to get reception.
took the tele boxed with all original bits but been refused for a refund due to there s no fault found on the item and it's been opened (how am i suppose to know there s no reception without turning on the TV ?? ?). my reason for not been able to get any reception have been treated as an excuse.
i am just wondering if they really have an non-refund policy for all opened good (unlike argos who will give no quibble refund straight away if you take the good back in new condition). or any advice will be greatful!

they have a 14 day refund policy as far as i know - as long as you return the goods unused or as new within the time period - now they should refund you if you just tell them you opened the box but realised it would look to big in your flat etc. You could always try taking it to another Comet store and try for a refund there instead? Alternatively phone their customer care line and complain politely but loudly0

thanks for the advice but i have tried 2 stores already... had no luck, the 2nd one even tried the tele and proved to me that the machine worked fine and i have explained it very clearly that the only reason for refunding the TV is bcos i have no reception...0

Well if you really want your money back, just make up a fault, call up head office & tell them how disgusted you are with their service & voila money back!, always works for meNo one said it was gonna be easy!0

Comets are within their rights to refuse to refund as the goods are not faulty. The onus was with you to check whether the goods were to be suitable for use.
Not withstanding that check look at their 14 refund policy carefully. Does it say goods must be returned unopened? If not and it was not pointed out to you at the time of purchase then they cannot impose that condition on you now.
This is what it says on-line but the store notices might be different.
Refunds and exchanges
Unopened products
If you bought a product, or received it as a gift, and decide that you do not require it you can return it to any Comet store within 28 days of delivery for a full refund, as long as the packaging is unopened.
Opened products
If you bought your product online or by telephone, and are not completely satisfied with your purchase you can return it to us for a full refund as long as you tell us that you want to return it within seven days of the product being delivered. The product may be returned to any of the Comet stores throughout the country for a full refund. This does not apply to products purchased from a Comet store.
Clearly from the above if you buy on line you can open and return if you wish.
Talking of Argos I noticed a sign in my local branch saying returns under the 16 moneyback must be in their original packaging which has not been damaged due to opening. I hadn't notice this before.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Argos have really moved the goal posts with their returns since they started the policy.
You used to be able to take it back no-quibbles within 16 days. Then you had to take it back "unused". I too had not noticed it had now moved to that described by Poppy9. However, they do not appear to be saying you cannot open it, just that you must not damage the packaging by opening. I recently returned as USB cable that was too short but had had to cut open the top of a sealed plastic bag to get it out. We sellotaped the top back and re-stapled the cardboard bit back on and they took it back no questions asked. Obviously, if you rip the packaging and they cannot then re-sell the goods as new, they are losing out so I suppose it is not entirely unreasonable of them to word it as they do.0 -
As Poppy says, look in the store (or on the back of your reciept) for their returns policy. If it says it can be returned in as new condition, I would say that means you should get a refund. If it says you can return in unopened condition then just pack it up as neat as it was, and don't tell them you opened it - go to yet another store to try again.
You can only have a refund if you meet their conditions, so far you have apparantly been telling them that you have opened and tried the product.
I wish people would stop shopping at these High street rip off merchants comet currys dixons pc world etc.
Too expensive.
No proper easy refund as in this case.
No refund if broken they offer a replacement and you have to fight like hell to get a refund.0 -
tell them the salesman said that you would get a reception
when you asked him if it would work in an area of bad reception
then when you got home the tv didnt get reception in your area
then you could argue that the good were sold not fit for the task
im never using that company in that case
i suggest a boycot of all money savers to demand consumer rights0 -

While this seems to be supported by a posts on here, my experience of Currys was different. I bought a Sony DVD recorder from Currys. It was an end of line so reduced. I didn't want the newer model as it had features I knew I would never be interested in so this was actually a bargain for me. It subsequently turned out that that particular model had an inherent fault and my machine also had a tuning fault. We checked with Sony who said that the machine should go back to Currys.
We took it back to the store where we were offered an exchange with our warranty starting again from that day. There was no reason not to accept an exchange as I still wanted the machine at that point. However, they did not have any more in stock and obviously would get no more in. Without any hesitation, we were offered the next model up, at the same price we had paid for the original model. It was also made clear that this was just an offer by them and if we wanted a refund there was no problem. Naturally we took the new model particularly as I did not want to have to start again with reviewing what I wanted. At no time did they question what we said about the faults, they accepted our word. It was all entirely painless and dealt with very quickly.
We have also recently bought a freezer from Currys and the reason we shopped there was because it was the cheapest for that model.
I don't think the shops should be responsible for people buying the wrong item and we should be grateful for those that do allow you to return goods but not expect it as of right. In the instance raised by the OP, it is not the store's fault there is no reception at that particular place. No doubt the tv would work perfectly in a different area.0 -

Notice they only offered you a refund when they realised they would not be able to source you a replacement. It was your right to be offered a refund from the first. As usual their first course of action was to get you a replacement. Had they had a replacement in stock and you insisted (as is your right) on a refund they would have refused probably.
Your example only proves my point. It was acceptable to you because that's what you wanted, had you wanted a refund (initially) you might have not been so happy.0 -
i have had good experiences with currys as well... the fridge went dead after 9months where it has one year garantee, instant exchange (of course u need to wait for it to be delivered) no problems at all. and new garantee start on the day of exchange!
the TV is £100, i was going to get the cheapy ones but anything under £100 have been out of stock... i can not re-seal it as it was sellotaped and i did pay extra attention on in-store posters but did not see one!
i really want the money back, i even asked them to charge me an admin fee so that i can get it refunded but again, it's a NO...
never liked comet, if i knew luton better then i wouldnt have went in there (3:30pm on Sunday, i need to leave on the same night and he need a TV)0
