I definately would have, and probably would have been the same price as well!

So there is only ONE permitted route really from Waterloo to Chessington South, so why do they say ANY Permitted Route, it makes it seem like there is more than one, like the one I went!?

    =(

From Waterloo, yes, one route. But your ticket was via London, not specifically Waterloo

You could certainly have travelled from Victoria, changing at Clapham Junction.

Possibly from Blackfriars or London Bridge, changing at Wimbledon - not 100% certain on this but it's highly probable

There might be other obscure routes as well.

Dailyclicker I'm not clued up on this but my advice would be if you got a fine, write in to appeal and state your case. Word the letter calmly and maybe also mention the 4 station workers who u deem threatening. My thinking is that they most likely to write that fine off. Dont let it get to u too much, life's too short to let it upset u, as u will learn. Goodluck.

The link I posted still works for me. Anyone else having a problem, or just the OP?

I have found a real train ticket myself and it has the wording on the back with was previously on the front. It still says "it may be used on any Train Company's trains by any Permitted Route". There's no way you can interpret that to mean that you can simply decide for yourself what is a permitted route.

Rather more interesting, for the OP's argument, is the fact that apparently the OP "was told at Waterloo it would be fine." What precisely did the staff at Waterloo tell you, who did they work for, and what did you tell them? And did they actually look at your ticket or just assume you had one to Chessington or a Travelcard?

MarkyMarkD, since you ask... the link you posted doesn't work for me either.
All I get is a box with 'gallery.hd.org' in it.
Just as you would if you used this link...

But never mind, we're wandering off topic.

    Hello!

I bought a ticket which is valid from:
    Ilford to Chessington South

It cost me £6.60, and on the ticket it says:
    'Any Route Permitted'

What does this mean? As I went from:
    Ilford - Waterloo - Surbiton - Chessington

    Instead of going from:
    Ilford - Waterloo - Chessington

At Surbiton, 4 Fare-Evasion Officers 'ganged up' on me, and I feel I was treated extremely unfairly. I asked for his name which he refused but wanted me to fill out some book for fare evasion.

How can it be classed as 'Fare Evasion' when it would cost no more that what I paid going the route I did, and on the ticket it does say 'Any Route Permitted'

Can anyone help me out here please?

    Thanks
    Stephen
    OK, a few points:-

    Surbiton is off-route.
The ticket you bought is PRICED zonally but is not a zonal ticket, so not actually valid to Surbiton.
    It is not "fare evasion".
You cannot be penalty fared for being off-route*. You can be excessed. In this case the excess is £0.00. This is what an RPI told me.

(* If you had gone beyond Zone 6 then you could be penalty fared as that would count as travelling over distance rather than being 'off route', AIUI)

Thanks very much for that reply =)

Sorry who are the RPIs? So they have no right to charge me £20.00?

    Thanks!

Revenue Protection Inspectors (P can also be substituted for C (collection) and I can be changed to O (officer)).

They can charge you £20 if you go beyond the point to which you had paid, e.g. if you had a ticket to Z6 and went beyond Z6 they can demand £20. Which I would advise you pay for it to not escalate further.

But, what they cannot do is charge you for being "off route".

I would say this sounds like you were "off route" but I suggest asking a (friendly) RPI to give his thoughts.

    Hmmm,

I am confused here. You had a rail+tube ticket, that covered zones 4 to 1 and to 6. I _believe_ that this should have been issued as a zone R1256 travelcard as that is the same price (unless your age means that it is cheaper to issue as point to point for a child ticket or whatever).

What day was this, and what time did you leave home? Stephen, how old are you?

If you want to PM me, I can help you appeal this. I'll need you to scan your tickets to me.

Just to confuse the issue even more.
C can also be substituted for Control as well.

Based on what has been said on here, I suggest you do appeal this. You cannot not be charged a PF for being 'off route' and I believe this tick box has now been removed from all new issue PF notices.

Contact gner_ex with your details and he will tell you what to say in your appeal letter.
