I bought a couple of those (at least I think they're the same, although mine have purple leaves) a few months ago at the garden centre. I put them in pots with some petunia and they were doing really well until the pots dried out the other week and now the leaves are turning brown :(

Mine has shiny purple bits on the leaves, but i think they have faded cause it hasn't really been in the sun :( I just chucked it anywhere i could find to keep it going :D
  • Hi everyone,

I hope somebody can help, I've found this plant growing in my garden and I don't know what it is, can anyone identify it for me please?

I saved your image and bumped up the size to get closer to the flowers, but the resolution wasn't high enough to show anything other than that they're white. However, the leaves look like classic impatiens species rather than the nightshade family, which was another thought I had. I'm going with impatiens. Don't let it seed!
  • Might be that - I thought it looked more like a dead nettle or a hemp nettle.

Lamium sp (prob L. album?) or a Galeopsis

If its in Lamnaceae (plant family for the above) it will have square stems, slightly hairy perhaps - so if you put stem between finger and forefinger and move it gently and it feels square its a prob one or other of the above species. (might have smelly leaves too, so if you crush them and it smells and has squareish stems its prob one of those - mind on and wash hands!!)

If impatiens then no square stem, no hairs (i think) either way it looks happy!

Good luck and let me know how you go!!!!

  • Thank you both for the info.

Fayjmck, I went and had a good luck at it and did more research and I think it's hemp nettle. It's certainly happy where it is but alas I'm not.

Thank you for your help, I don't like to remove plants when they are growing so well but unfortunately this one will have to go.

It looks like Indian Balm to me, it's a member of the Impatiens (busy Lizzie) family, and is classed as an invasive weed.

Get rid of it as soon as you can, if you let it seed you'll have loads of them in your garden next year.

    All the best,

    Eph.

  • Yeah was being kind, re: live and let live my philosophy is that if its growing well and not in way enjoy, otherwise remove and welcome the new plant opportunity- looks like hemp nettle, but us botanists scratch heads and think hmmmm what else can it be (before dismissing gut reaction :) trouble with knowing plants is - like the impatiens etc the more you know the more confusing it gets.

If hemp nettle, watch the roots, its like mint the slightest bit of root (or plant stem for that matter) will grow into a plant - xxxx

Can you believe that I wanted a fast climber for my trellis and was sold, Polygonum which equals 'Japanese/Chinese knotweed' and is not allowed to be handled by companies in some instances.

It's one of those horrible bloody things that devour the sides of railways etc.

I bought it from Lidls and after seeing it shoot up the trellis was a bit worried, this happened in days.

    I have written to them.
