TFL - London Buses - Yellow Unpaid Fare Notice

Hello!
I'm 16 but didn't have my Oyster today, the first bus I tried to get on I was refused by quite a rude woman, who just told me to 'get off now and walk.'
Manners cost nothing is what I've always been taught! =(
So along came the second bus, and the driver was a bit more helpful, although at first he did say the same, he then got out a yellow form and got me to fill it in.
I completed my details and he took these, and then he gave me a slip saying I had to pay £2.00 within 5 days.
The slip says:
Customer Service Form
Date & Time Issued: 04/06/08 14:30 Fare Due: £2-00
Unpaid fare notice
This slip only allows you to travel on the bus on which it was issued. It is issued on the understanding you will pay the amount due within 5 days to the address shown below. Payment by cheque or postal order, only, payable to 'London Buses'
Revenue Protection, Transport for London, PO BOX 3893, London, SW1W 9TN
1) My transport on the Buses is free because I have an Oyster Card, so why should I have to pay? I was in school uniform, so surely they can tell?
2) I do not have a cheque book, so I cannot really send them a cheque.
3) What will they do if I do not pay? Has anyone had any experience with this?
4) I cannot find any details on the TFL website about this policy. Anyone have a link to it please?
Hope you can help!
Best Wishes,
Stephen

You have to pay because you didn't have a ticket (or an oyster card).
They offer you another way to pay as you are not the only one without a cheque book in London. Everyone, though can get a postal order.
Just pay it and now you know the rules, maybe you'll remember your card like everyone else has to.0 -
Thanks for your reply.
Everyone forgets things. But the fact is that I do have an Oyster card and they should have a system in place which can check in cases like this.
Has anyone else had experience with this? Do they chase you up for the £2-00?
Thanks0 -
Send them a nice letter explaining all this within the 5 days and ask them to let you off (please). They can only say "no", so no harm done if it fails.0
-
Maybe he should have told you to do one too
You didnt have a ticket, you need to pay for one
Stop moaning and pay up0 -
Your taxes pay for my free transport to provide young people with free transport, do they want even more money?0
-
Well as this was an innocent mistake and you have already confirmed that you were taught good manners you already know the right thing to do is pay up. Its only 2 quid and he didn't turf you off as the first driver did, do the right thing.Boots Card - £17.53, Nectar Points - £15.06 - *Saving for Chrimbo*2015 Savings Fund - £2575.000

The price for everyone is £2 for a single journey. An adult oystercard reduces that to 90p, and a child oyster/zip card reduces it to free IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. Free child travel is a privilege, not a right.
If you do not pay this, they are likely to chase it up - the ultimate result is that you could go before the magistrates court. School uniform is irrelevant (except that on females, some drivers seem to like it and let them off).0 -
If you are under 18 then this is not enforceable under law, i.e. they cant take you to criminal court. So personally I would just ignore it.
The worst that will happen is they will withdraw your oystercard. If you do not pay this, they are likely to chase it up - the ultimate result is that you could go before the magistrates court.Ex-Employee of a Train Operating Company.

It is very hard for them to take a minor to court and I believe the court would just laugh it out. You cannot sue anyone who is under 18 which is effectively what TfL would be doing.
Firstly, the age of criminal responsibility is 10. Secondly, they wouldn't be suing the OP so they can take them to court.0 -
To the OP
Did you have a valid ticket in your posession for travel? NO
The driver let you travel on the understanding you would pay £2, so why are you now quibling, if you didnt want to pay, you could have walked as the first driver suggested
Of course if you were travelling from home to school, you could have gone home and got your card0
