Broken Television

Can anyone advise of my rights with a telly that is 3 1/2 years old?
I bought a Phillips television in November 2001 from Currys. In addition to this, I also purchased a 2 year extended warranty which has now expired.
Just recently the television has started to turn itself off and then turn back on whilst mid viewing. It now doesn't turn on at all. It's completely had it!
Someone advised me that a shop is responsible for up to 5 years for an electrical item once it has been purchased. However, I am unable to locate any further information on this. I have looked on the Trading Standards website and also the Consumer Direct website but have found no information that can help me.
Does anyone have any advise please? I paid a lot of money for the television and I am not in a position to purchase another one.
It was bought on credit through the shop's finance provider but has now been paid in full - if that makes any difference at all.

Hello
I had a Phillips 32" widescreen which one night when we went to bed turned itself back on...I !!!!!! myself to say the least..
I was advised that the problem was a faulty switch and was a common problem with this television.
I was charged £70.00 for it to be repaired and a new switch replaced the old one but the problem happened again.. It lasted for about 1 year and went again and there was a strong smell of burning and switched itself back on...
Thankyou0 -
sorry, keep repeating myself, but next time buy your tellies from john lewis. they offer a free 5 year warranty, and are wonderful. warranty is even transferrable. they replaced mine [4 and 3/4 yr old tv] for free, and new 5 year warranty when my son broke the tv by licking it [don't ask]0

I don't think you will ahve any rights - there is no specific law as far as I know - but rather a duty for the manuafacturer to provide a problem free product for a reasonable period of time - it also depends on the value of the product (ie if you buy a tv for £80 and it lasts 3 years - not a hope in hell of getting it replaced, if you buy a tv for £3000 you may have more of a chance)- I think 3 1/2 years (and if you bought it in November 2001 thats nearly 4 years) is quite a reasonable time and you would probably have a difficult time trying to convince them to replace or repair it. The problem of the TV switching itself on and off is not a big problem and as is said above shouldn't cost too much to fix.DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

We bought a Sony 32 inch widescreen in January costing £800. It has the same fault, keeps swithcing itself off and on. It has been repaired twice so far, and has now broken again. The first time was in June and they kept the set for 2 weeks, it lasted 10 days when we had it back. The second repair took 4 weeks and a number of parts were replaced. The television broke again the same day we had it back. As it was the day before we went on holiday, and we have only just come back, we have not had it taken away yet. They are refusing to replace the set, and say it is Sonys policy that only if the set is beyond repair will it be replaced. It is an intermitent fault and has not happened in the last 2 days, but when it does the only way to get it to work again is to switch it off for a short time. I am going to contact trading standards before letting them repair it again as i am concerned what is going to happen when the guarantee expires. we have even taken a video of it when it is switching on and off.0

Thanks everyone.
I have recently found out that i can only pursue this by taking Curry's to COurt and proving that the Telly should have lasted longer.

Sales of Goods Act, as amended in, I think, 1976. Ring Trading Standards and they will tell you chapter and verse, but basically you have six years to take it back, although the longer it is then the less they have to do - they may repair it rather than replace it for example, or offer a percentage of the value of the item.
But call Trading Standards at the local council and they will tell you exactly what to do and say. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
