Bedroom Walls

I have taken off the wallpaper in my bedroom. to reveal some quite shoddy walls in places. random places chunks are missing too. all in all, majority of them are ok, flat ,level n clear

Have taken few pics to show. seem to be made up of diff layers at top n bottom.

I took the paper off as i was planning to possibly Paint next time and wanted to see the state of the walls.

Does anyone have advise on what to do. will it be just as easy to put new paper up, rather than having to have all the walls replastered & then painted. i read few threads about the horrors of trying to plaster yourself, but me off, as nuffin comes natural to me. possibly could attempt small area but not sure. think a friend has done plastering before, might ask.

looks ok - maybe just fill/sand the worst with polyfilla and use lining paper before painting.
At worst, it only needs a light plaster skim afaik

Actually I dont think the walls are that bad :D Compared to the walls I have stripped lately they are quite good.

I agree with rdpro, give them a good rub down, do the necessary filling, and perhaps line them, but use a heavyish LP, ie 1200 or 1400.

thanks for the advise. maybe my pictures werent of the bad bits lol

so u think i should polyfiller bad bits. then sand them down, with a proper sander?

I did wonder about if you could paper over and use it as a base, but i came up with the conclusion, that well, if your papering, why not just get the paper colour that you want instead of painting

Thick lining paper hides a mutitude of sins and can be freshened up later without much effort. It is definitely worth spending a bit of time with polyfilla and a sander first though, as there is nothing worse that seeing a lump that you wish you had spent a bit more time on!
    Good luck!

Oh, and mix up the wallpaper paste a little stronger if you are using thicker lining paper!

I know what your saying about coloured finish paper, but there can be problems sometimes with it, unless you buy the more expensive rolls.

You know when you buy a coloured plain paper, say for example a blue paper, the butt joins, or the edges of the paper are always white cause the backing is white, why the designers dont have the edges the same colour as the paper beats me.

Somestimes if the paper dont soak long enough, or you have stretched it, or its just a pig of a paper, what happens sometimes the edges shrink, you notice the next day when the paper is dry, you will see a tiny white gap,(cause the blasted edges are white).

With lining paper, even if this did happen, usually when you paint over with your chosen colour it wont notice if you have a tiny gap between joins, unless its a good size gap, but you can always sort that out, wheras coloured finish paper can be a nightmare.

There is little tricks that you can do to minimise these gaps after the paper has dried, but its very time consuming, so you have to follow the instructions to the letter, and pray.:D

Hi the pics look ok to me! I would not sand down anything the dust and mess afterwards is everywhere. Rub down any plaster high point/flecks that would show in the final paper. Wash the walls with sugar soap. The green is just the colour used yrs ago on plaster. Some tips for you, Use a plumb bob to get a vertical to work to and use good quality paste boards clean buckets of fresh paste and a roller to paste the backing. Do not let it soak in, also paste the walls. I also use a "blade" like a squeegee to do the papering, not a papering brush.

To be honest those wall don't look half bad... I have just finished decorating both bedrooms and I stripped the paper and then made good the walls with filler and got OH to sand the walls down with an electric sander and fine paper... I had already rubbed down the worst bits.. it works fine as long as you wear goggles, mask , move anything precious out of the room , close door and open windows... let the dust settle then hoover and wet wipe... my walls are by no means perfect but once painted and the room put back to rights they look sooooooooo good ... so much easier once its done for refreshing when it starts to look shabby...
We did a base coat of white to cover up the different colours of filler/wall and that should give you an idea of wether you can live with the flaws then you could line with heavy duty paper if you decide they don't look good enough..

thanks for the advice guys. i dont have a sander so just been looking on diy.com and argos. how good or how much should i spend.

I told a friend, that i was thinking of having Red walls in bedroom with some sort of Black pattern somewhere, possibly stencil, it didnt go down too well.

Said it would make room seem alot smaller and darker.

    any advice,

The thing with painting walls a dark colour is that it will show up any imperfections more than a lighter colour, even if you use a mat finish.

If you dont want to line, and want to go for red, do a base coat first in a magnolia first, after you have done your sanding etc first.
This will show al the nicks, indents, cracks etc, plus the red will cover better of the mag, and wont need as many coats as you woud if you did the base coat white.
