It might be a question of funding; unless you're on means tested benefits not every college will be able to fund you to do an Access course, whereas the Diploma (if it's your first level 3) will be free for you.0 -
Sallylizzie wrote: »I did it over 1 year, but I had my GCSE English, only needed my maths, however, if you need your English and Maths then they'll advise you do it over 2 years becasue it's a lot of work. Of course if you don't need them then 1 year is the quickest way. I do know that most uni's ( for SW degree)requires a min of GCSE math and it's always good to have some experience in the form of volunteer work.

It's a statutory requirement to have GCSE in English and Maths (or equivalent) for a Social Work degree. You're right about having substantial relevant experience as well.0 -

Yeah you're right, but next year my uni is saying GCSE and thats it, no equivalent. Makes it harder for the people who stuggle with maths.:o

Alwaysonthego - Well done to you! I just know I'm personally sick of studying and being so skint at the moment! But defiantely go for it and congrats on the masters placement as there's not many around!!!!
Driving_soon - My access course was mostly essay based and all the essays had to be written the way they need to be written for uni which was really helpful for me! Only had odd maths tests and like SL, the odd timed essay. But it was very similar to the way that my uni course was structured. If you know which uni's you want to apply for, I'd recommend finding out how they assess your work and go for the college course that assesses in the same way. One of the the uni's I applied for was mostly exam based, so although the access course would have got me on the course, it wouldn't have prepared me in any way for the exams!0 -

You're right, this is happening more and more. Can't say I blame them, GCSE Maths is not a particularly high standard.0 -
Sol00... Good luck at Sterling, what sre you doing there?
Oldernotwiser, Yeah your right, my tutors say that SW degrees getting higher and higher applicants so they're having to put the entry requirements a little harder, iykwim and be more selective, also again for my uni, they are not offering as many places next year too.
