Caught my dog eating cat poo from our veg patch. Will he come to any harm? and why is he doing this?

Well it's not that uncommon for dogs to eat their own poo!! Ours used to...yuck!! However we used to try and get and clean it up before she did:T although not always successful.
As for eating cat poo, not heard that one. Perhaps give the vet a ring.

Apparently there is no scientic reason for dogs to do this such as lack of nutrition etc. They just do it.
The down side is that they can pick up other animals parasites and worms etc. Best get regular worm treatments.
My dog likes eating chicken poo when I clean out the hen house..... Then they lick you face later :think:NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
Goose poo seems to be a delicacy with ours. When she was staying with my parents they thought that eating cat poo was making her be sick, but it turned out to be the Metacam she was on.
I still try to discourage it, if only because of what N9eav says

My dog does this too! Its gross! We have 2 cats and he can smell from inside the house when they've done a poo outside!!
We just try and check the garden and clean up all the poo that we notice.
Its not harmfull for them, our vet just told us that they love it because of the stuff that is in the cat poo is really tempting for dogs. My dog also tried to eat our cats food before we moved it out of reach!:beer:0 -
It's very common and mine loves to indulge in cow pats, sheep poo and if I'm not quick in the back garden then her own too!
You could try muzzling her or teach her not to eat it the same way as you would teach her to leave food dropped on the floor (leave - give a treat that is NOT what she is eyeing up... remove temptation).
There is a technical term for poo eating but other than needing more regular worming then no there shouldn't be any actual problems - other than the seriously yucky factor!DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

My dog used to do this when she was younger (probably still does as I never see any cat poo in the garden!).
She used to practically follow the cat around the garden and wait for it to come out of her bum. Minging man!Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

My hairy mutt doesn't eat the the cat poo, but covers it up when they do one in the tray and are too lazy to cover it themselves!
They just stand and watch him do it and I'm sure they have a smirk on their faces thinking 'ha ha you are covering my !!!!!! up!!!! :rotfl:!!!0 -
If I don't get to the cats' litter tray quickly, the dog "cleans" it up for me ...
The only side-effect we've noticed is the dog then has really stinky wind!:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

I read about this in an animal psychology book - apparently very common!
The important thing is to provide your cat with a safe place to do its business - dogs like Pollyanna's can follow them around and make them quite miserable, feeling like they have to hold it in!Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0
