Vegetable Crisps

  • M&S had fruit crisps at one time too, apple ones and they were delicious. Shame they don't do them now though. A friend of mine used to make them but just deep fried them, just used a fine potato peeler on whatever vegetable you wanted to make crisps of and quickly deep fried them. Always turned out spot on.

Tchibo had a food dehydrator on their site a good while back for around £30, if you come across one you could make them that way too, healthier version. I'm on the look out for one too.

I used the recipe from the link posted by Jolaared and it worked perfectly

I made plain potato crips and sweet potato crips in the microwave and they were delicious. You need to eat them straight away though as they loose their crispness if you put them away in plastic boxes ... though they are still rather nice :D

  • I love this site! There's so much great info here, thank you all :A

I just wandered into town and saw a Lakeland microwave crisp maker in the window of one of the charity shops for 79p. It's still in its original packaging. Stopped off at the market for beetroot, parsnips and potatoes - can't wait to give these a try! yum, and hopefully good for you too
  • Forgot to mention that I couldn't find a blowtorch or a cheese knife in the shop, here's hoping I can manage without them :rotfl:
  • Don't try this,
Have just bought Lakeland Toastabags and am experimenting with different things. So I thought having read this thread. Ah ha! so I sliced the spud with a potato peeler, tossed them in oil, them bunged the into toasta bag. Result; a lump of soggy oily potato in the botton of said bag. Oh well back to the drawing board.
BTW. is there a toastabag thread anywhere?

OOOOOOOHHHHHH I tried this at lunch time - used the food processor to slice the potato into waffer thin slices, tossed in oil, salt and cayene pepper and bunged in the microwave on a plate for 4 mins, turned them and did them for another 1min......GOOOOORGEOUS!!!! I could be hooked on making these now!

  • Hi:hello:

Can anyone tell me if there is a way of making healthy vegetable crisps? I love them, but looking at a bag today they have 33.3g fat per 100g!!!

Is there an alternative to frying them in oil? I want to be able to let ds (11 months) have some but am wary of letting him eat something so fatty!!

    Thanks

    Jxx

  • You could try spraying them lightly with oil and bake them in the oven. Not done it myself but don't see why it wouldn't work. I may well try this later, my son hates greasy foods so he may like them too. Let me know if you try it and how they turned out, I'll do the same.
