I decided to invest in a Phillips Sonicare Deluxe last year after a horrendous tooth extraction experience. The experience was so bad that It made me really want to care more (i've always brushed x2 a day with a manual) for my teeth to avoid another extraction in the future. So besides cutting out sugar, I researched sonic toothbrushes and I was so impressed with the reviews I decided to buy one.
One year on and I couldn't live without my Sonicare now. My teeth are whiter, smoother and I never have bleeding gums like I used to with a manual. My mouth and teeth feel a 100 times fresher and cleaner.
The biggest thing is changing a manual toothbrushing habit of a life time to a sonic. When you initially use a sonic its a bit of a strange sensation but you soon become adjusted to it. I personally think you need to give a sonic toothbrush at least 6 months of constant usage to be converted.
Having said this, they aren't for everyone but its worth giving them a whirl

You will need to contact Bristol Dental School, University of Bristol and ask for it. There will probably be a charge. I think the study you want is "Video instruction to develop a panel of experts in the use of electric toothbrushes to compare cleaning by 4 electric toothbrushes. Renton-Harper, P, Addy, M, Newcombe, RG, Journal of Clinical Periodontology 28, 917-923, 2001."0 -
got rid of my sonic aswell ... i could use it for several mins and still feel that my teeth hadnt been cleaned ... id advise anyone to use a manual ... or both if they have to use a sonic , so says my dentist aswell .0

Just as I said - horses for courses. You cannot advise everyone to use a manual toothbrush based on only your own experience.
And I'm afraid I don't care about a study into these devices enough to want to pay for it. It's rather strange that at least the conclusions aren't on line, given universities' normal progressive attitude towards the internet.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -
Well CurryKing I did give my personal opinion on them in my previous post. As Gromit has said, previous posters have also expressed their views on the Sonic toothbrush too."There are no pockets in a shroud..."0

personal opinions are, well just that, personal.
independent clinical trials show that a mechanical toothbrush gets rid of more plaque, and general dirt from your teeth than sonic ones, which in turn are better than manual ones.
To give you a rough idea, they’d be scored something like 90, 60, 10 respectively, so the sonic ones are still good, but bare in mind they are in general the most expensive due to marketing hype / lies.0
