Superdrug this morning had Phillips Sonicare Advance 4700 toothbrushes from £80 down to £40 as their offer of the week.

if you talk to any dental hygenist (that isn't sponsored by Philips of course) and ask for their unbias informed opinion on electric toothbrushes, they will tell you a standard mechanical one is better than a sonic one. The sonic ones aren't bad, but they are a gimmick and Bristol University has a comprehensive study on this topic.

I am sure that Aldi's had Sonic toothbrushes for sale much cheaper than that last week.

Well it's sorted out my gum problems, and my dentist (as far as I know not sponsored by Philips) was pleased I'd got one. Is this study on line?

personaly much prefer the mechanical ones, wth the sonic one my mouth and teeth dont feel as clean, would not buy a sonic one again <----my teeth

I've had one for a year or so now and they certainly made my teeth look and feel FAR cleaner than a manual or standard electric toothbrush.

We have a dentist in the family who is not "sponsored by Philips" or anyone else and he shares a high opinion of them.

Just as with shavers, I'm sure it's great argument fodder, because it'll be horses for courses. Some people will do better with manual toothbrushes, some with electric, and some with sonic. I happen to like my Sonicare toothbrush, even if I'm at the stage of breaking it apart to replace the batteries.
