I dismantled my little mini for a respray last year when the tax & mot ran out.
Due to a change of circumstances i need to sell and have a buyer.
However i want to keep the number ( 29 dpo ) But it seems the car needs a mot for me to do this. The car would pass one with no problem but it would require me to put the car back together and tax it!!
The buyer has said he will give me the number back when he has done up the car but i have no guarantee of this.
Is there anything i can do?

Very little other than trust the buyer or MOT and Tax it, the number plate is possibly worth more than the car.0

I think if the car is going back on the road the new owner would have to put a plate on it that was not newer or disguised the age of the original car, so as a cheapest option it could have an Irish plate on there. Obviously there is a cost attached to this.
That sounds quite a valuable plate, you really can't do this on trust, maybe somesort of contract could be written up, but it sounds complicated as as you say I don't think anything can be done without the car being legal and that sounds like it will take some time.
Edited to ask;
Would you actually have to tax it? I thought it was just an mot issue but could be wrongI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

To transfer a registration mark from one vehicle to another you will need to complete a V317 - Transfering a Vehicle Registration Number application form. The cost of transfer is £80.
I bought my son personal plates for his 18th, now he has bought a new car and needs to change them, just follow the process above.

I know what you're saying, we done it several times but only when putting a private plate on a car that has had a previous number. Almost invariably the orig No goes back on at transfer
In this case it is an old original number that is to be taken off, its different.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

retain the number and sell the car, the new purchaser can then apply for a q plate as he is rebuilding the old car.2008 winnings....:)

from what I could gather, before a plate could be transferred the car does need to be in a fit state.
We have a TR6 mid restoration with a plate on it worth around £4k. We tried everything to be able to get the plate onto retention so it could be sold and release the money to finish the restoration, but it cant be done.
My understanding is unless the reg is on retention, then it has to come from a roadworthy donor vehicle.0 -
Thanks all. Spoken to DVLA and the car needs a mot and tax. I can then put my number on retention and the car will get its old number back ( N 1996 ) or another N.0

Each registration mark issued is absolutely UNIQUE. That means only one may (or may not) have ever been issued of each possible combination. In addition, many older marks may have not survived the test of time, ending up on a scrapped vehicle to be lost forever. A number or mark can only be transferred if it exists on a testable vehicle, or is held (retained) on an official government certificate; and its transfer is allowed under Ministry of Transport regulations.2008 winnings....:)
