I hope that a lot of carpetbaggers held onto their shares.

Without their interference, our building societies would be just fine.

I was referring to Texas Pacific Group specifically. They are an investment company with rather a good record:-

I think you will find that they will be the ones having a laugh in a few years time. Other posters have given you an idea of what they will be doing.

I have Bradford and Bingley shares! From when they turned to a bank

I've still got my Halifax shares from de-mutualisation. Big mistake. I've been hanging on to the damned things in the hope that they'll catch up with what they'd have been worth if I'd just sold them at the outset and put the money with the rest of my savings. Some hope of that now, last year they were worth £11k, now they're worth £5k!

I don't need anyone to give me any ideas on what they're doing thanks, & frankly anyone who wants to "invest" in banks now with probably 7/8ths of the problems still hiding under the surface is a cretin.

I don't care how big they are or how much money they have, I've seen it all before when institutions & other groups jump in with big bucks - they still make a complete pigs ear of things & lose money.

The credit contraction has only just begun, defaults are going to increase dramatically, the loan book will be worth a fraction of where it is now due to dropping house prices alone, add them together & you have not much left.

Wait until credit card securities go the same way the mortgages did in another 6 - 12 months time & see what happens then.

I bow to your infinite wisdom.

Why don't you give TPG a call or, better still, forward your CV. I'm sure they will benefit from your advice as to how to invest their 30 Billion.

Small change to you I am sure.

Just because they've got 30 billion doesn't mean all the big gambles they take pay off. Probably most of them fail, but the few that come off can cover those losses.

That is true, but their success record is excellent.

Incidently, there was an interesting article in the Money Section of the Sunday Times on contrary investing choices and how many of the seriously successful investors had got that way taking big, seemingly foolhardy gambles on what are contrary to market choices. Banking was mentioned more than once as an investment for now.
