Well I cannot afford to pay for the 74 shares they have allocated to me, so I shall just hang on to the ones that I have already got. I just pick up the dividend and run basically.

I know what you're saying but surely the share price will eventually go back up.

Why? One of the great amateur myths of investing in shares - The price goes down so it has to go back up again. Just think Northern Rock or Bradford and Bingley to give a lie to this theory.

chrissy3634 the price will eventually go back up provided that there is not a fundamental change in their business, provided they have the funds to survive the downturn and provided various other things, like good management. Those preconditions are not necessarily true. They could run out of money as Northern Rock did or the credit crunch could be a long-lasting change that reduces their profitability and hence reduces the appropriate price for their shares.

If you want reduced risk, you should sell the shares and buy something relatively stable like the BlackRock UK Absolute Alpha fund that should gain in a falling market. This is the approach that will protect you from the chance that they do go bankrupt and lose their owners (you) all of their money.

If you're content to sit back and not worry about the ups and downs and risk losing more, then you can simply stay where you are now.

If you want to reduce your risk you could do a bit of each.
