LOL, I didn't say they wouldn't shout, just that they didn't have too much to shout about, and that they probably shouldn't. I for one would think that particular industry requires a lot more regulation. Given the inadequacies (spelling?) of the FSCS
Yep... totally agree... especially about the FSCS, and to be honest the inadequacies of the FSA!!! tho I and many others are questioning what the FSA's motivation is in this: Regulating shorters, or saving the bank?I'd have thought most people might be somewhat relieved that some measure to prevent multi-million $ headgefunds shorting them into bankruptcy was attempted.
I'm not sure the hedge funds are soley at fault here. HBOS's exposure to the US and UK housing market, toxic debt, and gaping holes in their balance sheet, and liquidity problems are probably as much to blame for their slide into bankruptcy.
There are strong arguments for letting them sink. or get fire-sale'd off. If it wasn't for the innocent customers, of which i'm happy to say i'm only a minor one (credit card) - i'd say let market forces take their course.
I struggle to think of any other company in any other sector that would be given as much protection.
I imagine that the ex-rover & coalmining workers are watching these shenanigans with a mixture of contempt and bemusement.
Also it's important to remember that the horrors that may well yet be visited on the UK economy, household budgets, and employment figures, are pretty much a direct result of the stupidity of bankers like the ones running HBOS.
And it looks like they will go entirely unpunished.0 -

I'd say without a doubt, the purpose of the regulation is largely about protecting UK financial institutions.
My views on regulaing hedge funds does not originate with any activities they may have in the UK with regards to shorting banks, or even their practice of shorting stocks or commodites in general, that's actually a minor issue regarding the need for regulation of these entities.
I'd be somewhat hypocritical to comment overly negatively on shorting in general since about half my trading is on the short side.I'm not sure the hedge funds are soley at fault here. HBOS's exposure to the US and UK housing market, toxic debt, and gaping holes in their balance sheet, and liquidity problems are probably as much to blame for their slide into bankruptcy.
Agree totally, HBOS's position is entirely HBOS's fault. There are strong arguments for letting them sink. or get fire-sale'd off. If it wasn't for the innocent customers, of which i'm happy to say i'm only a minor one (credit card) - i'd say let market forces take their course.
Under normal circumstances, and if the government actually had a viable plan in place to protect depositors, I'd say yes.I struggle to think of any other company in any other sector that would be given as much protection.
I imagine that the ex-rover & coalmining workers are watching these shenanigans with a mixture of contempt and bemusement.
Again I'd agree, trouble is that the failure of a major bank, in the current envoironment poses a serious risk to the systemic collapse of the entire financial sector in this country which currently forms a major part of the economy of UK Plc.Also it's important to remember that the horrors that may well yet be visited on the UK economy, household budgets, and employment figures, are pretty much a direct result of the stupidity of bankers like the ones running HBOS.
And it looks like they will go entirely unpunished.
As to the bankers that is the nature of our society, if you have enough money and power, in the main you get away with a lot.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Firstly you used phrases such as
Short selling
Then you followed it up with
Spread betting
Then after that you say
Maybe i should get out more
and today you say
Maybe i'm bitter and twisted
All i'm doing is giving the share price for HBOS, so maybe an apology from you for such words would be nice;)
