Today I get 2008/2009 financial statement taking the full amount paid for that year off the previous un-amended total (£11946.30!).... so they've just totall ignored the missing 600 quid for this year.

Im frikking furious, i've been trying to get this sorted for 9-10 months since i got 2007/2008 statement!... I could kill someone... as Im totally helpless... am trying to phone then now... but am guess they will give me the 'wait one or two month's line. Bunch of amateurs!.

Just wanted to say yes the amended £600 will not have been included on your current statement as these are classed as advised repayments and not actual. They only take the information from HMRC to produce the statements.

Did you statement from 2007/2008 statement say "Interim Statement" at the top? If you it means they dont have the full record. Did you change employers duing the tax year?

HMRC may have the money sitting waiting to be set over or the money sitting in an unassigned pool especially if the ni number was incorrect. HMRC will be working through the unassigned pool to get the money applied to accounts as soon as possible. This is either done my manual assignment or more information from the employer.

Anyone got the address/tel/department for Student Loan queries at HMRC or is it something that my companies HR dept should be dealing with?

    Hi DJ

HMRC Student Loans office will not speak to repayers. They only deal with either SLC or employers. You could either ask your employer or wait for SLC to investigate with HMRC. If you are really unhappy you could complain to SLC who will then press HMRC to get this information through.

As you previously said, you have sent your P60, therefore this information will be held on the system. Unfortunately it will not appear on your statement because it is classed as advised repayments. Until they get the amended file from HMRC it will not show. You could always phone SLC and ask for a settlement figure done until the day you phoned as this will take in the P60 details.

Just remember if you do call the settlement will not include any repayments you have made since the beginning of the tax year unless you give them the details from your payslips then they can give you accurate balance till today or whenever you phone.

    Thanks for the info.

Spoke to the SLC today to complain... basically their reply was all I can do is wait... Just worried that the amount will never be applied to my account... how long do the HMRC usually take to sort the past years files out?

HMRC can take as long as they want to sort out the previous years files. I would not put the complaint over the phone. Get it done in writing. Include copies of your P60 and be clear about what your asking as this will help address your concerns quickly. The complaints address should be on the SLC website
  • I took out a SLC loan over 10 years ago for the paltry sum of £1300. Through HMRC deductions over the years, I've repaid somewhere in the region of 3 times this amount to SLC. However, as the HMRC have never (EVER) sent the details to SLC, I apparently now owe them £2000 (Sept-09).

For the past 7 or 8 years I have contacted them (both SLC and HMRC) countless times regarding the matter. Alas, nothing has ever been resolved, no matter what proof I offer; whether it be payslips, P60s, employer confirmation letters...

As it does not have an impact on my credit rating, I decided to completely ignore all of their communications after a while. I still receive notices from debt collection agencies working on behalf of SLC, and I now enjoy goading them over the phone, daring them to take legal action against me. Of course, they never do.

I can only hope that some day they do decided to take legal action against me, and so I will have the opportunity to reclaim all the monies owed. In the meantime, I treat these overpayments as a long term savings account.

I don't blame the SLC for this mess, but they are gutless, having not offered to help at any stage. Therefore, so long as they continue to play the goat on the issue, I'm prepared to wait for my chance for a level playing field.

As I live in the Glasgow area, it's a well know fact that anyone who takes a job with SLC is usually either not very bright or just plain lazy. Glasgow is full of people with a penchant for non-existent work ethics, so you can be sure that SLC's office will always remain here.

P.S. If anyone from SLC is reading this, don't bother replying... you would break the habit of a lifetime.
  • Is it by any chance possible that the payments you've been making could be less than the interest that's accruing? That could be a reason why you now owe more than when you started.

Apologies if this is off beam, it's just a thought.

If it's the 07/08 stuff, a lot of people may be asking for proof ATM and for the past seven months for SFE grants/loans, and some areas having a new system put in.
