His best chances are to be honest and upfront and tell them that he believes he has been overpaid - Honesty is the best answer and way to deal with this problem, hinding will only make the matter worse, in the long run.

You'd immediately get your cheque book out and send a cheque to the company's wage department for £3k when it's up to them to pay the correct amount?
Erm, yes I would.
I would also have known that the £3k payment wasnt *maybe a tax refund*
Tell me would you? Or would you have dishonestly kept what you knew wasn't rightfully yours under the spurious justification of a dodgy loophole?:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! I wonder if this may be viewed as fraud???!!!
Of payment by a dishonest means, which the company have every right to involve the Police regarding it, if it were just afew £100 then they might agree a repayment plan for you but £3000, then the serious question to be asked here is, will that be believed by the company and if they involve the Police them also, I doubt not, you could have waited a few days but you failed too.
If I were you I would be asking the bank for 3k tomorrow and hoping the company will take the money back.
I wonder if this would go on your ref when you leave your current job, if you ever do to get a new one, something like "cased 3k and spent it, didnt tell us we over paid him, just spent it"
I would be honest, and tell themDELETE ACCOUNT.

I personally think they'll never notice. Reason being it will just be some gimp behind a computer typing in the wrong number for the BACS payment - they'll be in trouble for the mistake, so they aren't going to bring the issue up. Only thing would be if someone else got paid a wrong amount and someone checked up on the work the person making the error had done.
I'd suggest OP keeps money and sees if they come asking for it. My bet is they won't and you might get lucky if this person types the wrong amount in again
Plus, is there something that says we all have to legally look at our bank account statements straight away and check any money we receive against wage slips? There's none that I know of. OP might not a bank statement in the post for another 3 months, and there's nothing that says they have to legally look at it and pay back any unsolicited monies.0 -

I didnt even read past this bit because I bet you a pound to a pinch of shit that they do.

as a "gimp who works behind a computer" in a payroll department I can tell you that it will depend on the overpayments policy of your company. most are legally required to arrange repayment of an overpayment as soon as it is identified (which it will be, if not by a check on unusually high salaries for the month, by reconciling HMRC etc). If you are lucky then your company policy will say that you can negotiate small repayments over a set period.
Also, they aren't going to care what you "thought" the money was-it is reasonable for them to expect that an employee would bother to check such a huge payment with the payroll section before spending it. The fact that you've used it all in one go also shows them that you didn't "accidentally" spend it bit by bit.
Most companies have a line in their T&C that says it is the responsibility of the employee to check their wages and report any errors...Remember to always be yourself-unless you suck. Joss Whedon0 -

What rubbish to say to the OP, have you had the same problem at some point then?!
After looking at this online and seeing what it would come under, it appear that the OP MAY have committed an offence OF "Obtaining money by deception" in which case I seriously advise the OP to get to the bank and ask them for 3k and go along to his company and ask the manager VERY nicely to repay the sum and hope that will be the end of it.
Honesty is the best way, dont lisen to this guy, if you owed that company you would want someone you had work for you to own up!!!
Treat others as you want to be, if you dont own up soon then IF the company find out then your chances of using "TAX" as your defence will be almost a laughing matter!!!DELETE ACCOUNT.

I second this.
And as for this "gimp" working behind a PC, it is a FACT it is the employee who should be checking his wages, just like if you were short of a few £££ one month you would report it, they wouldnt come to you!!!!DELETE ACCOUNT.
